Experiences with the Memorial Hospital Pattaya

Submitted article by Ron.

At a certain moment my girlfriend falls ill and the medicines I bought do not help. So off to the hospital. There you have the choice between a government hospital, Bangkok Hospital and Memorial hospital.

Since we live close to the latter, we go there. But the costs for a doctor's visit are only borne by the insurance if it is caused by an accident. So she has to pay for it herself. After the investigation, she has to cough up a 5.300 baht. That's quite a bit so I'll take it for myself.

Later I get sick myself and can't get rid of the fever despite taking paracetamol. There are also problems with the respiratory tract, but that is a known thing. This should be resolved quickly with antibiotics. Due to the ongoing problems, I also go to the Memorial hospital. The doctor listens for a moment, but a back appears to him as something that does not exist. I need to be admitted and they drive me to the emergency room.

Immediately a lady comes running to sign a paper. I have to pay 45.000 baht for stay per night. I say that I am insured and that everything goes through the insurance and provide the necessary information. But apparently they have a habit of being difficult about it and prefer direct cash money. I don't sign and I go to some treatment.

They barely understand English and don't make much effort. But if a Russian comes in, there are three translators present. I have to pay a 5.600 baht and with the prescribed medication I go back. Later it turns out that medication that is also available in the pharmacy is more expensive in the hospital. But not only this also the doctor's visit. For my girlfriend it was 325 baht and for me 800 baht. They explain this difference as insurance but that is bullshit.

I don't stop there and contact the insurance company that has a doctor call from Singapore. This reports that there is no problem for a withdrawal and that I am fully covered. She then sends an email to the hospital to confirm this. Back there and back to a doctor, but he apparently knows that there is also a back. Another recording is said, as if I did not know this.

Another lady walks up to sign. Yes, I am really lucky because today the price is only 40.000 baht per night. I don't sign and call Singapore. There they advise me to leave there and go to Bangkok Hospital in Pattaya where everything appears to be in order for an admission. Indeed, it is not difficult to do and everything appears to be in order. Examination shows that in addition to a bronchitis, I have also contracted the flu. That explains a lot and since I am a high-risk patient, this must be handled with the utmost care. I am well taken care of there and although I do not have to pay myself, I ask how much is charged per night. This shows for the excellent room I had but a 31.000 baht per night.

Conclusion: Ignore the Memorial hospital. They only think about money. Memorial Company Hospital is now the new name.

What are those rooms in pattaya. In Bangkok in the top hospitals, a private room is less than 10.000 baht. The price you mention for the Bangkok Pattay hospital is simply money grabbing.

I went to bangkok hospital 1 time on koh samui.
    had an ear infection.
When I came in, I had to register first, the cost was 5000 bath.
Then I could see a doctor and possibly get medication.
I didn't ask how much it would cost, just went.

@ Riekie I have completely different experiences. Have been treated in Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok several times. Registration was free, the doctor was quickly available and medicines (for a fee, of course) were provided. Nothing but praise for the branch in Bangkok.

      • cor verhoef says up

Dick, I think the private hospitals in tourist towns have different priorities than their branches in Bangkok. At the top of the list is “financially undressing” instead of “healing the patient”. The hospitals know that all those tourists are fully insured and therefore charge absurdly high prices. The letter writer was asked 45.000 for a room, while in a palace like Bumrungrad you pay a third for it.

        • Johan says up

@Cor I certainly do not agree with this. A few years ago I also went to Bangkok Hospital in Pattaya for an inflammation in my leg. Well helped a course of antibiotics, X-rays and 2x consultation for less than 5000 baht, you can no longer approach a doctor for that in the Netherlands. By the way a little Pattaya goer knows that you shouldn't go to the Memorial, just the name already -:)

What an event and I would like to thank Ron for that.

His story shows that you should not just blindly pay for certain things. Anywhere in the world!

However, a light came on for me along the way… It is not for nothing that the “hospital” now has Memorial COMPANY Hospital.

'Nuff Said, Innit', as the English say.

The Memorial Hospital in Pattaya is a legalized scam. My mother had a clogged ear that needed cleaning and we went to the Memorial. The doctor prescribed a de-wax remedy. I protested that that would not help and that the ear had to be cleaned using a special suction device. I myself suffer from a blocked ear every year and at the Ear Eye Nose Throat hospital in Bangkok, this problem is solved in 3 minutes with a special plunger. Cost: 250 baht.
In the Memorial that turned out not to be possible. We wait for the medicine and after an hour we received a bottle with ear drops. Cost including the thirty second consultation: 1895 baht. There would be no point protesting so we paid and later went to the ear hospital where the problem was fixed for a fraction of that price.
Avoid this “hospital” like the plague.

Bangkok-Samui hospital paid my insurance in 2005 for 2 nights and a test for dengue, blood was sent to BKK to determine the type of dengue, 55.000 baht.

We visited the Bangkok Hospital a few years ago.
    My husband broke his ankle.
He was put in a wheelchair and driven by a “sister”.
I had it registered at the counter and I immediately called our health insurer CZ.
We were picked up again and taken to the relevant department.
Taking pictures and then plaster applied by the doctor himself and put the ankle.
After this we were taken to the physio where Nico had to learn to walk stairs with crutches.
We were given crutches and medicines.
    Cost: less than 300 euros.
    Everything was reimbursed by CZ.
All in all an excellent treatment and we would go to the same hospital again.

I have the same experience with Bangkok hospital in Pattaya as what is described at memorial.
Cost me a lot of unnecessary money, while I was insured, but had signed.
Many mistakes are also made there, such as with one Harry, also a Dutchman.

Have even noticed that if they make mistakes or take wrong pictures, you just have to pay for them, if you say so later, they are indignant, so much so that the doctor said to my girlfriend, how can you live with that man.

I want to tell that doctor in person and then it's over and I'm never going there again. Also what they said before the operation is nowhere near true, already 1 1/2 years later.
Hospital is just too commercial with bold dollar/euro signs. Good knowledge of NL insurance was included, my girlfriend who does insurance in Thailand asked what the room cost for that knowledge, he also wanted to know. That was none of their business, the European insurance paid for everything. So just exploitation, In Bangkok pattaya hospital several Dutch people have already been removed by Dutch insurers, too expensive or prescribed treatment was not correct, too fast a risky operation, afterwards it turned out that the person in question had not undergone any surgery in NL either.

So first think what you are getting into and never sign if you are insured, my Thai insurer also advised me to do this.

I think there are more choice than those three, bumrunrath, sukhumvit, bangkok-pattaya just to name a few.

It is with all the good-looking glossy hospitals where many beautiful idle ladies are walking around.

As far as medicines are concerned, I have experienced a factor of 10. Simple diauretic as Lassic, 10 times as expensive in the hospital as at a good pharmacy. Augmentin recently, same story.

I ask the doctor what he prescribes and then I buy it outside the hospital. Doctor doesn't like that (committee?) and explains it as follows.

Look, if you buy a coke down the street it costs 25 bath, but in Hilton 6 dollars. Think of us as Hilton. I then ran away

Already a few years ago , bangkok pattaya hospital. Had stepped on a scorpion and had a toe twice its normal size and pulsating. In this hospital, doctor, incised toe to relieve pressure and drain any poisson, a night VIP room with own sister. Penicillin and a week's worth of prescription drugs, 18.000 baht. But trickery they wanted me to pay later in cash even though the BUPA charging was agreed in advance. So not done

A friend of mine, who was on vacation on Samui, had to pay 30.000 baht in the Samui-Bangkok hospital for a check up (nothing found). Because he only 20.000 baht
could pin, they hit him with an ambulance with a credit
card device. His credit card was in his bungalow in Maenam.
Another miracle that he didn't have to pay extra for that ambulance ride 🙂

I have been to many hospitals in Pattaya, Phuket and BKK, in the memorial hospital they also scammed me, incompetently, and paid a lot for a consultation and very expensive medicines for stomach intestines and liver. In BKK I got the same complaints, then I i went to Bumrungrad Hospital,i entered and handed my ticket (number) at the counter after I had a short examination, the specialist asked me how I paid, I said I am insured for this, the girl behind the counter started calling my insurance and got approval, then I had an extensive examination and a general body check so they found a few more things such as my cholesterol level, I got a nurse in the morning who stayed with me all day until I checked stool and urine the evening, the next morning (sober) I signed a form and could go without paying, insurance paid everything +-1250 Euro.

What prices for simple treatments. I live in Chiang Mai and last year I had to be hospitalized for erysipelas on my left leg. I went to Ram Hospital in Chiang Mai

I am insured with “April International”, a French insurance company. the insurance was taken out by my broker in Hua Hin, a Dutch insurance office.

I gave my insurance card. It was copied and I got a room for 1800 baht per night. All the trimmings in the room. Flat TV, microwave, CD player, free wifi and an extra bed, if someone wants to stay overnight. Separate toilet and shower

All staff speak English, you get a choice menu for food, Thai and European food, but pay separately.

After five days of admission I was allowed to go home. My insurance agent had already given me the number of my “case” on the day of admission. I had to sign twice at the payment office and was able to go home. The hospital and the insurance company arranged everything else. Even the follow-up consultation with the doctor was reimbursed.

The insurance costs a bit, but it is a French company that falls under French law. So no premium increase due to age. If you were hired without exclusions, like me, they are not allowed to post exclusions anymore. And your insurance is valid all over the world, except in the Netherlands. You must not be thrown out, even if I live to be a hundred years old

The Ram Hospital in Chiang Mai is a good and efficient operating hospital. I have good experiences with it.

    • Roel says up

I do know someone with the same French insurance who had to get out after a substantial claim or many exclusions. Don't know what exactly is going on, of course, the man may have concealed something.

I do know that if there is really something wrong, insurers will try to find out and you often have to sign for it what you have had in the past, they go back to your date of birth, if there is only one thing what they can find is not paid.

By the way, my insurance also pays for everything, but you are simply not allowed to sign yourself, you are actually signing for absurdly high treatment. I pay approximately 23000 baths per year, only insured upon admission, so a low price for a good insurer. Previous admission went well, but with my accident, BK Pattaya Hospital simply took advantage of the situation, signed, paid the advance immediately and still waited 3 days for the operation, shattered hip and collarbone. My insurer would have paid everything if I had not signed and paid a deposit.

Recently acquaintance died in the same hospital, already paid a lot but after death daughter could not pay everything before being exempted through will. Go there with a lawyer and behold, a lot of money was deducted from the bill.

      • to print says up

I didn't hide anything when I signed up. I even reported the operations of 40 years ago. I have glaucoma, so I reported that and the examination at the Ram hospital did not hide anything either. I was accepted without any qualifications.

My experience with this health insurance fund is that payment was made without any comment from them. Directly to the hospital. I didn't have to sign anything in advance or anything. No advance either. I have no deductible with the insurance.

Of course I cannot judge what happened to your acquaintance. However, I immediately reported the insurance company the day I was suddenly admitted. Within an hour I was given the file number and the insurance company approached Ram Hospital.

    • Marcus says up

I am as healthy as a fish, but somewhat heavy. April has then refused it. Too bad because they were the cheapest good company. Now BUPA Thailand and although they always think they are being cheated they have paid for a situation during vacation in Holland

And to think that a berth in a Thai hospital only costs 600-800 baht per day, including three meals, drinks and nursing. I should know, because a cousin of my wife works in such a hospital. Falang can also use such a hospital, although they may (but I'm not sure) have to be residents in Thailand. And they must love Thai food, because they don't have endive stew with stewed meat.

Unfortunately a lot of experiences with hospitals, Bangkok Pattaya too, unfortunately it has all become very commercial and the prices are sky high.
When our 3-year-old daughter did not get better after several short recordings, the response was good; the doctor believed me when I reported that anemia was impossible and there had to be more.
Unfortunately, I was not in Thailand at the next admission, but the doctor had not forgotten my words and an in-depth examination had to be carried out.
Surely they were afraid that there would be no payment and she was moved to the state hospital in Chonburi, then it sucks that you are not there and your wife does not intervene? we were very well insured! and a top hospital no problem.

Fortunately I was able to fly back quickly and was quickly on site in the "slaughterhouse", where the little one was alone in a room but brrr.
After talking to the treating doctor, the bad news; leukemia…
Reported immediately that she had to be moved to top hospital Bumrungrad and really 30 minutes later in an ambulance to Bangkok.

Here the treating doctor turned out to be Chonburi doctor's teacher, which she had mentioned.

Well, I can assure you that you will not be helped better anywhere else, all in all more than 1,5 million baht in costs that were neatly reimbursed.
It is true that people first want the financial guarantee before they get started.

The Bangkok P hospital has made a big mistake here; after all, it had also been treatable in their hospital in Bangkok.

Fortunately, it is now fine after years of treatment, which is the most important thing.!!

Visited BKK-P hospital the last time and tip: they want a guarantee, and do this with a credit card, then you will be helped immediately and you will not have to wait an extra day for a guarantee from your own insurance.
Self in the room within hours and good treatment followed, with yes, special "tools" from Bangkok, which also first required a guarantee of insurance!, again my credit card and the same day they continued.

Have the idea whether you would like to keep the patient for a day longer in order to knock the baht out of the pockets.

State hospitals are also okay, but you are sick enough and want a little privacy and food is also important for the healing process.

Tip; Banglamung hospital also has its own private rooms, you just have to report it.
and the doctors / doctors are often experienced, but they pay off their student debt.

Better staying healthy is the best, but if you do get sick, that's what hospitals are for

People... go to a government hospital if at all possible... you will be well cared for, no priority over Thais, but also not poached like a tourist eel..., you should already know by now that in Pattaya hospitals you can just being emptied...

The Memorial hospital is money, money. I was unlucky a few years ago when I broke my hip in the morning on a dismount. Arrived at the hospital, took pictures, surgeon was there and I had to be operated on. 6 hours later I had surgery (what else do you need): 250.000 baht. Fortunately I was insured, signed, only showed ORA etc.

Now it comes: the next day a nurse comes and says: they don't answer the phone and they are available 24 hours, it says. I say: just do a fax, she will come back later, fax does not work. Well there you lie.

Called my son, and he said don't pay Dad. That nuf comes back the next day and said everything ok. But she still says you have to pay first, because we don't believe your insurance. And so it goes on and on. Then I called ORA and told all that bullshit. He says: this is the same every day.

After 7 days I had seen it, a therapist taught me to walk with sticks, 2 days. I told ORA: I will pay first and send the invoice. The surgeon would have loved to hold me for another week, money money. Completed the therapy yourself. Within 1 week I had the money in the account.

Of course you don't always have that opportunity, but when I needed a hip replacement last year, my wife and I went to 3 different hospitals for a quote.
Since I was allowed to pay the bill myself, that naturally played a major role.
We went to the state hospital in Chonburi and there came an amount of 120.000
Baht with a private room. The Aikchon hospital gave a quote with a private room of 250.000 Baht. And to top it all off, the Bangkok Pattaya hospital gave 450.000 Baht with a private room, but certainly had to take into account that hip surgery often involved complications. so I regained some extra energy. I opted for the first option and everything went perfectly. I once visited BKK-Pattaya hospital, but also in Chonburi the girls from the fashion show were on par with the BKK. The only disadvantage is that there are Little English is spoken, but my wife was also able to stay in the room and therefore immediately act as an interpreter. Admitted on Monday, operated on Tuesday and went home on Friday without complications or extra costs. Excellent affordable hospital.

Didn't you then consider flying back to NL to have everything done there? I assume that the same applies in NL, namely once back on your own country you automatically fall back under the sick fund (law), if you were previously in line with this, or if retired, this is the case in Belgium, so think that in the Netherlands similar rule applies?

My mother ended up in BKK in St Louis hospital 3 years ago, she was there for 3 days and then heart films were made, brain scan and another battery of investigations, cost 35000 baht including private room and food. The insurance reported that that hospital was known to be good

3 years ago I spent 6 days in the Pattaya Bangkok hospital with a balance disorder.
Received a lot of medicines and in the end my insurance had to pay 5000 euros
When I came home, my doctor told me that this ailment could be solved quickly with exercises
but that I certainly didn't need any medication for that.

I don't know how everyone here on the blog gets insurance. I was thrown out of my Dutch insurance simply because of my emigration to Thailand and I, the pensionado, had nowhere to go reasonably. I'm not afraid of an inspection, something like wanting to insure yourself against fire if you're already on fire, it wasn't.
