Dear Martin,

For some time now I have been plagued by a kind of parasite that the doctors (BPH dermatology, now tens of thousands of Baht) in Thailand do not know what to do with. Only antibiotics in pill and tube form. Real research other than optical is not done. The millimeter-sized creeps settle in my skin, especially on the chest. Through my hands I seem to infect myself here and there. Not with third parties. Mostly on the thighs and on the side of my body and face. It most closely resembles leeches. Once a wound you will soon see very small red spots (pinhead), I suspect eggs that develop later and often in a line shape.

If anything is changed by the antibiotics, a wound (small) with raised edges and a green layer (pus?)

Do you have any advice for me?

Thanks in advance.

B

Dear B,

You could have Dirofilaria Immitis (canine heartworm). This is transmitted by mosquitoes.

In dogs, the parasite travels to the heart and lungs, which rarely occurs in humans. Treatment is surgical, where the worms are removed from the skin.

A second possibility is bed bugs. A pest control company can provide a solution there.

There are also many other options. Without further information it is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

The best clinic for this kind of thing in Thailand is:

  • Thai Travel Clinic, Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
  • Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand

I hope it is of some use for you.

Sincerely,

Maarten
