Dear Martin,

In response to a previous question yesterday about sleeping medication, I also have a question about my sleeping behavior, and being forced to be awake at night.

I am 70 years old, 178 cm tall, weigh 84 kg, do not smoke, occasionally some alcohol, a few hours of fitness 4 times a week. For several years now I have noticed that I can hardly eat anything in the evening, otherwise I will only sleep a few hours. If I just have breakfast in the morning, a hot meal around 13 pm, then I can only have a light evening meal afterwards. Sometimes I only take a few pieces of fruit.

If I turn it around and my wife has prepared a delicious Thai meal, or if I take some snacks, nuts and the like in the evenings, I wake up after a maximum of 3 hours of sleep, my stomach area feels heavy and I no longer fall asleep. During the day I only sleep a few hours, but if this happens several times a week, I twist my day-night rhythm, and I also go astray, etc., as mentioned in the previous message.

I have 2 questions: how come I can no longer tolerate meals in the evenings, and is there a medicine that gives some relief. I can't get any further than Buscopan supp via the internet.

Many thanks in advance for your effort.

Regards,

A.

Best A,

There are several foods that can interfere with sleep and others that help sleep: www.gezondheidsnet.nl/slapen/je-eten-bepaalt-je-sleep

Avoid sugars and possibly go to bed with a little hunger. Not as Holle Bolle Gijs.

Vitamin D deficiency can also be a cause. Therefore, take a tablet of Nat D (1.000 IU) after lunch, for example.

Do not eat anything more than two hours before going to bed, except at parties and parties.

Unfortunately, there are no medicines for this very common ailment. At most you can try an antacid such as omeprazole 20 mg (before breakfast). If it helps, you may have a stomach problem.

I can't say more about it either. Also go Googling on: “insomnia with dinner in the evening” You might find something there that suits you

Yours faithfully,

Dr. Maarten
