Dear Martin,

First of all, thank you very much for helping Thailand visitors with advice. I am a Thailand snowbird. For a few years now I have been preparing to settle there 'permanently' with a retirement visa.

I recently had an inguinal hernia of 1 centimeter and will soon receive an invitation from a Dutch hospital to undergo surgery. My question is whether it is better to have this done in Thailand or in the Netherlands?

The reason for my doubt is that since C19 I have been very careful about trusting healthcare providers based in the EU. I distrust the Mnra and therefore also any blood transfusion.

I am 53 years old, 1,79 m tall and weigh 78 kilos. Do not smoke, only drink 2 to 3 glasses of alcohol per week. I don't take any medications, I have no allergies. I'm actually quite healthy. Exercise regularly (walking, hockey in the Netherlands, swimming in Thailand, occasionally Muy Thai).

My question is: Where is the best place to have my inguinal hernia repaired?

Regards,

T.

Dear T,
If I were you, I would have the fracture operated on in Thailand. However, ask for a Bassini Plastic, so no net. A mesh may be a bit sturdier, but can have unpleasant side effects (chronic pain) because it is a foreign body. The same material as an orange net. Even better is a combination of Bassini and Shouldice, developed at the time by Professor Camps and me. Even a decent surgeon can do that. Unfortunately the report has been lost.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maarten
