There has been quite a bit of fuss on social media lately about Coris' insurance policy. We at AA Insurance also offer this policy so I think it would be good to clear up any misunderstandings.

Reader question: Experience with CORIS travel and health insurance?

Is the Coris policy a health insurance?
Although the policy is presented as such by a number of parties, it is definitely not. It's travel insurance. This means that only urgent medical matters are covered and there is no automatic renewal. Therefore, do not expect more from the Coris policy than you would expect from a travel insurance policy in the Netherlands or Belgium. If you go on holiday abroad from the Netherlands for 3 months, you do not expect that you will be able to have a new hip placed, undergo chemotherapy or claim your high diabetes medication during the holiday at the expense of the travel insurance. Don't expect this from Coris either.

How are pre-existing conditions dealt with?
All pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc. are excluded from cover unless they are classified as “Acute deterioration of chronic illnesses”. There is limited coverage for this.
In addition, there is no medical questionnaire for applications, so if in doubt, the medical history will always be examined.

Do you still need an address in the Netherlands or Belgium?
No that is not necessary. But remember that it is travel insurance. In the event of a serious illness or accident, Coris will only reimburse those medical costs that are necessary to make you fit enough to travel back to your home country. However, if you live in Thailand, there is no point in letting you travel back to your home country if you don't have insurance/accommodation there. At that point the coverage by Coris in Thailand will stop.

Am I insured in Thailand all year round?
Yes, that is not a problem. You are not insured in your mother country.

Does Coris have a branch in Thailand?
No. In the media, a party on Koh Samui presents itself as Coris, but this party is just a broker like we are.

Does Coris cover for Covid?
No.

Are the premiums the same everywhere?
No. We are surprised to see that some parties put an amount on top of the standard premium. With surprise because this is actually a mortal sin in the insurance world. With us, the premium is therefore – depending on the chosen plan – 15 to 18% lower. The parties that increase the standard premiums do so with the excuse that they add free COVID insurance. However, that is an 850 baht policy with only 100,000 baht of coverage for medical expenses due to COVID. Many people think they are covered for 1,000,000 but that amount only becomes available if one falls into a coma due to COVID or dies. For the amount of the increased premium, you can pay for such a COVID insurance yourself about 4 times.

Can I co-insure my Thai other half?
No, people with Thai nationality living in Thailand are not accepted.

Does AA Insurance support the Coris insurance?
As an insurance intermediary, we strive to insure everyone in a safe manner. Only good health insurance is truly safe. However, this comes with a price tag, especially at a higher age. For people who cannot afford this, the Coris option – despite its limitations – is an affordable solution.

I fully agree with this. It is a pity that many still cannot find their way to this agent. Branches in Chang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya city and Hua Hin.

At least this is clear, clear and professional information that is very useful to us.

    Thanks to Mr. Mathieu.

Moderator: Your question is very unclear. AA Insurance is not an insurer but an intermediary. Perhaps you meant Coris? Formulate your question a little better from now on.

Nothing but praise for AA, not only for the personal approach and clear advice, but also for the regular support and contributions to various charity institutions in Thailand. Applause!

Because we are both older and have underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetics. You don't actually come into contact with regular health insurance anymore. Unless almost priceless. We both took Coris, to have something. With the option of bone fractures. We are not getting any younger. We see it more as a kind of accident insurance. At least you have something
