Beer brands in Cambodia (MosayMay / Shutterstock.com)

Traveling through Cambodia you will come across a lot, if not hundreds, of advertising columns of the German beer brand Ganzberg on certain routes.

To be honest, I'm not a real beer drinker and no connoisseur at all. Still, it is a brave piece of marketing to gain a foothold in a country like Cambodia, where you usually have to pay less than one US dollar for a golden yellow Ankor or Cambodia beer. In addition, the brand means absolutely nothing to me, ergo I have not encountered it anywhere in a pub or restaurant.

premium beer

With the slogan German Premium Beer, people apparently think that it should succeed. Although the beer is brewed in Phnom Penh, I honestly have serious doubts about that.
You even have to laugh at the slogan 'Premium', a slogan that is also used by Heineken and many other brewers.
To find out more about this, in my opinion, empty slogan, I did some research and see what Biernet.nl, which presents itself as 'The largest beer site in the Netherlands', writes about it:

“Many people think there is a difference between lager and premium lager. This also makes sense. People often think of higher quality when they hear the word premium. Premium is better than not premium. It doesn't work that way in all cases.
There are more than 5.000 brands in Germany, which makes it difficult to stand out with your beer. If your beer is not unique, it will never be known. Brewers were and are therefore always looking for something new. This is how the term premium lager originated. A German man coined this term in the 60s to stand out from the crowd. And this has worked well.
Today there are still many ambiguities about it. Many people are confused by this term and think that premium lager is better than lager, but this is not the case. Premium lager is not of higher quality than lager. The term is used by breweries as a marketing strategy.”

Personal taste

Beer is really no different than wine or any other drink. Of course, taste differences can be observed between the many brands caused by the type of hops, the type of water and other ingredients that are added. In short, the craftsmanship of the brewer. Beer should not go in the direction of the so-called wine connoisseurs who look more at the label and then have a hot ritual before taking a sip.

Back in time

Because the water was not drinkable years ago, you could find a small beer brewer in every place. Without perhaps knowing it, many of us have a distant ancestor who once manifested himself as a beer brewer.
Apparently brewing beer isn't particularly difficult and neither is alcohol. As a child, I still remember the large glass large green bottles in which my grandfather clandestinely distilled apple wine and gin during the war years. Time is coming back because the small brewers are rearing their heads. The Netherlands currently has no less than 370 officially registered beer breweries. Only one person works at 270 of these companies. Amsterdam takes the cake with 45 breweries. It is doubtful whether these 370 have added the predicate premium to their product, but if you have to believe them, the taste is superior to what the large breweries expect in thousands of hectoliters. For me, they can all apply the word Premium to their beer and as an extra, Joseph personally allows them to add the Gold Medal 2019, because Ganzberg flirted with that in 2018. The only condition is that a cardboard of only 6 bottles must be sent to the editors of Thailandblog for inspection. After approval, the Gold Medal 2019 predicate may be used. I classify 'premium' under the same label as 'artisan', 'authentic' or 'Granny's way'. Marketing that says nothing about quality.

I would like to join many, I don't care whether it says premium or whatever, as long as it is tasty.
I've been living in Siem Reap for over a year and I like to have a beer, and it's not that hard here.
Most beers are indeed called premium, but the strange thing is that most Cambodians drink this Ganzberg beer like water. (because of this premium) ??
Now that is of course also possible in terms of price range because, say, a can or a draft beer from all those brands in the cafe costs you 50 cents, so even the Cambodians can afford that.
So let's say no premium no lager but cheers
