The province of Mae Hong Son is preparing for the festive start of the tourist season, culminating in the Bua Tong sunflower fields on Doi Mae U Kho mountain, which will serve as a central attraction. The natural phenomenon is celebrated with the annual Bua Tong Festival starting from November 11 in Khun Yuam district.

The fields, famous for their breathtaking Mexican sunflowers, are already showing signs of life, with around 10% of the flowers already in full bloom. The first bloom has already covered part of the mountainside in a vibrant yellow, heralding the packed spectacle that attracts around 100.000 visitors every year.

In a joint effort with the private sector, local authorities are planning a ceremonial opening for the festival. This event not only attracts visitors, but also provides a stage for local artisans to exhibit and sell their products under the OTOP initiative, which stands for 'One Tambon One Product'. This initiative is intended to stimulate local entrepreneurship.

With a flowering season running from November to December, the immense area of 1,6 million square meters turns into a vibrant sea of yellow flowers. This makes it a popular destination for both local and international tourists in the cooler months.
