There you are at Schiphol and with your tickets for Thailand in hand and yes, the passport is still on the kitchen table at home. What now? Then you can try to get an emergency passport. More and more travelers are knocking on the door of the Marechaussee for this, writes NBR news radio.

In August it is therefore very busy at the Bureau Emergency Documents at Schiphol, where temporary travel documents or emergency passports are issued. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee informs BNR that travelers are increasingly asking for an emergency passport. That number rose by more than 9 percent in the past year.

Last year, 8.600 emergency passports were issued at Schiphol. This year (up to and including August 8), 5.794 temporary passports have already been issued. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee also expects an increase this year.

Forgetfulness costs you money, for an emergency passport you have to pay € 46,61 immediately and the document is only valid for one trip. You must also meet a number of conditions. To apply for an emergency passport, you must submit the following documents:

  • Proof that you can't postpone the trip. You can demonstrate this with, for example, airline tickets and hotel reservations.
  • A recently certified copy of the Personal Records Database (BRP) stating your nationality, in an envelope. The envelope must be closed and sealed by the municipality. Certified means that the document is identical to the original.
  • A certified copy of your recent application for a new travel document (RAAS form), in an envelope. This envelope must also be closed and sealed by the municipality.
  • Other travel document(s), if you have them.
  • A valid proof of identity, such as a valid Dutch driving licence.
  • A recent passport photo that meets the passport photo requirements.
  • If you have lost your travel document: a certified copy of the official report of the missing person report.

And remember: an emergency passport is not suitable as identification.

Making a checklist and checking it before departure seems a lot more convenient to me. It also saves additional costs for the government.

You must have some authenticated and sealed items with you to score such an emergency passport. I think that means that you first have to go to the town hall and if they can't deliver your passport quickly, you can take all those papers to Schiphol. In the past, if you 'forgot' your passport, you could quickly score an emergency passport, but that route seems to be closed now, as they announced last year or longer. Now the new passport is valid for 10 years and that saves hassle. However, keep an eye out for the 3 or 6 month regulations that apply in some countries. I must say that the taxi drivers who drive me to the airports often ask me when boarding if I have my passport with me.

I don't understand how you can get an emergency passport if the passport is still on the kitchen table at home.
If you still have time to get to your town hall “a recently certified copy of the Personal Records Database (BRP) stating your nationality, in an envelope. The envelope must be closed and sealed by the municipality. Certified means that the document is identical to the original” and
“a certified copy of your recent application for a new travel document (RAAS form), in an envelope. This envelope also needs to be closed and sealed by the municipality”, you might as well go home and grab your passport from the kitchen table. I think it takes less time.

I really don't understand why you don't put your travel papers together before you go on vacation.
And I don't understand forgetting your passport at all!

It is unlikely that thousands of emergency passports will be issued to travelers who have left their passports on the kitchen table. It is impossible for them to meet all the conditions at Schiphol.

It happened to me once, leaving my passport in a different guise. An emergency passport was quickly arranged with an email from my employer, who sent a copy of my passport.

Another tip there are many people whose passport is not valid enough.
Buy a calendar and put on it the dates and validity of passport driver's license etc.
I know many people whose driver's licenses have expired. My boss was grateful that I made him aware in time that his passport had to be valid for another 6 months after returning home.
But yes, that's what a super secretary is for. Don't worry everyone can do it if you think about it.
