You know it, you look forward to a relaxing flight to Bangkok. Maybe you can take a nap in the meantime. But then your holiday fun is rudely disturbed by crying children on board the plane, in short, annoyances for air travelers.

Although the summer holidays should be the ultimate moment of relaxation, the flight to Thailand or another holiday destination in particular causes many irritations, according to research conducted by Vliegtickets.nl.

Nearly 40% of the 1.800 respondents find too little legroom on board very disturbing and they experience a lot of stress from flight changes shortly before departure. At the destination, the holidaymaker is most annoyed by the accommodation. Once back home, the irritations are quickly forgotten, then we are especially sad that the holiday seems so long ago.

Top 10 biggest flight annoyances

  1. Too little legroom on board.

    1. Not enough legroom on board?. You can check this far in advance with most airlines via the Internet. So you know and you can not object afterwards.
2.Flight changes shortly before departure?. With bona fide airlines this does not or rarely occur. This has never happened with all my European Championship flights, except that they booked me for free as a loyal customer to Business.
3.Having to get up very early?. What is very early?. Then take a flight that leaves late in the evening or after noon.
4.Long queues at the check-in counter?. On average about 350 people go on an airplane. If you are there early, you are the first in line and the others have a long queue in front of them and you do not.
5.High rates for airport parking?. There is public transport. So you don't have to go to the airport with your car. Or let the neighbor bring you and pay him a tank of petrol = cheaper
6.High rates at the catering establishments?. You can eat at home and, for example, take a plastic bottle of water with you. That reduces costs. Instead of 3, only order 1 draft beer? Airports expensive?. What do you think of € 5,25 for a bottle of Palm on Scheveningen beach?
7.Long waiting time for boarding?. If you're the first in line, you'll be through in no time. This is partly because it is checked whether everyone who has given up a suitcase is also on board. Otherwise, the suitcase will come out again.
8.Crying children on board?. Just assume that you also cried as a baby. Other babies have that right too. Do you know the pressure on your ears when landing. What do you think this does to a child like that, who really doesn't know what's happening?
9.Having to pay for food and drink on board?. Then take your food on board. You are on an airplane and not an annex reataurant. Then don't fly low-cost, then you don't even have that problem.
    10. The customs and baggage check?. Quite rightly so. Since these controls have been tightened, there have been mid-air abductions. For me they can be further sharpened. The rising percentage of smuggled and unauthorized goods is increasing from year to year.

If you go on an international train journey you don't get free food either. And what do you mean free, isn't it included in the ticket? It would be ideal if you buy a basic ticket and then order your wishes on top of that, such as food, luggage, drinks, extra space, etc. If you have no wishes, you travel cheaply.

      • rebell says up

Just fly Emirates. There you can reserve your seat immediately after booking and which food you want to have - completely free of charge. So it is possible, if you fly with the right people.

        • Christina says up

With KLM you can also reserve the seats immediately after your booking and payment. It can sometimes change if it is decided to use another aircraft, which is logical. If you want to eat something else that can also be drunk, it is free, but as far as we are concerned, some people are not allowed to serve spirits or beer.

          • rebell says up

There was no question of paying, but of free books I understand?. A lot can be done in this world against payment. Why pay extra at KLM to secure a seat when other airlines offer this comfort gehrrl free of charge?. But completely apart from the delicious meals on board (best airliner in the world) and best Entertainment on board. If something happens on board that you don't like (Alcohol), get the chief presser involved and complain. If it doesn't work, report it to the airliner by letter. That works, for sure. Do you know what the ranking is worth for an airliner? Pure gold !

Totally agree. Could have written it yourself.
I have been flying to Thailand for many years and back by chance.
We have not had any bad experiences in general.
I understand everything written below and from that I conclude that people are bothered by EVERYTHING. Yes, if you go on holiday like this, then it is usually not good at the holiday address either.
I like the above answers from rebel. If you do it that way and if you then start to annoy yourself a little less about others, it will all be okay. Have you ever thought that there are also people who are annoyed with you. None of us are perfect, especially in crowded airports and planes

  2. Thick says up

    1. Children crying and running down the aisle. 2. fellow passengers who get up from their seats every 10 minutes to get something from their hand luggage or to go to the toilet. 3. chair in front of you that is moved forward and backward 100 times. 4. during boarding, people who are pushing to be the first to board and do not listen/hear that certain passengers are allowed first. 5. people who board with 3, 4 or 5 pieces of hand luggage. 6. that your luggage is the last to roll off the conveyor belt despite the “priority sticker”. 7. You definitely want to hang a sticker on your hand luggage when you check in your luggage. 8. that my KLM flight attendants are so tall that there is no way they can walk down the aisle without knocking the aisle passengers half out of their seats.

No alcohol ban, better pay attention to consumption. I am not a Pattaya goer but I do like to drink a bottle of beer on such a longer trip.

Fat people who almost use my seat….and pay the same price for the ticket…and if I have a kilo too much in my luggage I almost have to take out a loan to pay for that extra kilo…make only kilo categories for overweight people pay extra for their overweight. They immediately have a stick behind the door to lose weight.

    • Hank b says up

Dear Albert, this seems like something, surcharge for overweight people, but? then maintain a standard weight, and then give those who are lighter discounts in proportion to the overweight,
Do you sometimes want to do something about the color or origin, now we hear.

    • Rudy Van Goethem says up

      Hello.

      Dear Mr. Van Doom.

I belong to that category of people who need 2 chairs. I hope you don't mind, because I'm paying for it too. I didn't ask for that, and comments like yours annoy me more than certain points raised above.

I always fly with Thai Airways, not exactly the cheapest airline, on the contrary, but their service is perfect, to the extent that on certain flights I don't even have to pay for that second seat, because I always get the last two seats right against the kitchen .

And my luggage and hand luggage is always way too heavy… I have never paid one euro extra for it at Thai Airways.
Your comment about "categories for overweight people, they immediately have a stick behind the door to lose weight" says everything about you, and probably about the airline you fly with.

I've been living in Pattaya for almost a year, and regularly fly back and forth to Belgium, and always with Thai Airways, so I know what I'm talking about…

I sat next to a heavy person this year. It was, as it were, wedged between the 2 armrests. After half an hour he raised the armrest on my side and came to occupy 1/3 of my seat. He's fat is his business, but I just find it outrageous that he's occupying half my seat.

  6. Erick says up

My biggest irritation is a usually too thick sweating and very strong smelling person leaning his arms over the armrest. And you have to sit next to that for 12 hours.

    Terrible !!!

    • Willem says up

On a flight back from Cancun had to sit in the air for about 9 hours from someone with horribly smelly feet. This person was at least 5 rows behind me, but still unbearable. Such a person must also be aware of this and wash them or otherwise put them in shoes or amputate them for all I care. As far as I know, no one has dared to complain either…. Gawd

      • Christina says up

Have you had a lot of bad luck. You will be refused on American flights. Sometimes I feel sorry for the staff, people don't follow instructions on the phone, don't take off belts, don't fasten if you can't. Some people think the cabin crew is for them.
Recently experienced that people wanted their food first. The tour leader of junk threatened himself because they hadn't had anything since the morning. Sorry it is a bit more expensive but at the airports you can also take something but yes the money was gone.

  8. Oosterbroek says up

My biggest annoyance is the behavior of customs at Schiphol, at passport control when you enter the country with your Thai girlfriend or wife, the arrogance radiates from the questions in coal English are not necessary, everything is checked by the Embassy .

    • Cornelis says up

Rightly so that the correctness of the visa, etc. is checked upon entry into the Schengen area - not by customs, incidentally, who have no involvement whatsoever in this.

      I completely agree with you.

But I also understand why these people wear body armor.
I am personally explaining (things they already know) how the fork is in the stem.
And then a colleague of this guy comes back from holiday, it is his first day at work, right through the conversation I am having he starts telling his holiday story and no one listens to me, yes, a few minutes later the man starts again asking questions, but then again from the beginning.

The perpetrator is (I don't remember his name) who, when a statement has to be made (by the government), represents the military police as spokesperson at Schiphol.

    • Ben Kuipers says up

Customs does not check passports. That is what the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee does. Incidentally, there are plenty of reasons to justify these types of checks. Unfortunately all too true.

When I fly, I unfortunately sometimes get annoyed, but I don't let that spoil the holiday visit. I speak to the person or parents concerned about this and if that does not help, the flying staff. Doing nothing is accepting it and solves nothing.

      Examples: not listening to the specified class when boarding;
Children who play (which is normal) but keep pushing against the backrest. Talk to the parents about this and the annoyance is usually resolved.

  9. Jeanine says up

We fly to Thailand every year with KLM. Book in advance 2 seats in the back of the plane for which you pay 30 euros more per person, but at least you will not be bothered by people who have to go to the toilet every five minutes at night or have something from the luggage rack. My husband can extend his legs to the side and is not bothered by the flight attendants' carts.

  10. Leo Eggebeen says up

Day flights where the shades have to be closed, from: sleep or die! I prefer to take a day flight because I don't like night flights. I'd like to see light and see lands I'm flying over.
"Would you please close the shade, it disturbs the other passengers"! Well, don't think so!! Not during the day!!

    • Eugenio says up

Maybe there are 20 people around you, who want to sleep, and are suddenly put in the bright light by you. It is not for nothing that the window shutters are asked to close by the staff of the aircraft. The lighting in the cabin is also dimmed by the crew for a reason. Who knows how long some (transfer) passengers have been on the road for a much longer time than you, and who would like to take a break. If you think you know better (I think it's day for everyone now!), then you shouldn't be surprised if others hate you. If you want to have light if necessary, you can turn on your own reading lamp.

  11. Arjan says up

    Just apply the following line;
Flights 3 hours = business class
    Flights > 6 hours = first class
Then you will be least annoyed, it has worked for me for 40 years.

Henk...B...I'm a racist, I'm talking about being overweight...perhaps if you google it you will see that the extra rate for overweight people is already being applied, Samoa, take a look at the short form KLM and google it and you will see that it is in the making. moderator noah we don't respond to each other but this is an exchange of views on the question of annoyances on the plane and before and after 🙂

  13. Daniel says up

I am most annoyed by the volume of hand luggage that is sometimes allowed. I take the bare essentials with me and stick to the 7 kg limit. Then I see that there are passengers who still board the plane with a large piece of luggage. In the past, I would look for a place to put my hand luggage. Now I will no longer tolerate it if the space allocated to me is full again. I try to be among the first on the plane so that I can have my locker. If this is already full, I will take out a large piece of luggage and place it in the hallway. It does cause some discussion, but I have learned not to worry about it. Luggage belongs in the hold, possibly for a fee.
Ryenair thigh not a gram too much or not a cm too big. This is how it should be for everyone.

    • Kito says up

      Totally agree Daniel.
And worst of all is the fact that fellow passengers even react aggrieved when you object to their antisocial attitude and believe that “you should board first”.
Needless to say, it is the same people who are constantly squeezing the boarding and trying to outrun everyone, irritating many people.
      Kito

People who think they are already at the beach in the sun and dress offensively. E.g. men in singlets, trousers cut too short that show the construction workers' cleavage, women with shorts that are much too short or loosely swinging breasts. And all this to better showcase those tattoos, piercings and gold chains?

  15. Harry says up

As always: the low price is immediately forgotten, but the lack of comfort….
    1) Do you want more legroom: booking another airline can be seen in advance, so don't complain if the dime in the front row also entails other inconveniences.
    2) flight changes…definitely cheap charter
    3) get up very early: definitely cheap charter offer
    4) long check-in lines: just be there early, and then walk around a bit.
+6) Provide your own refreshments, because at airports it is shockingly expensive because Schiphol cs asks such an insanely high rent from the operators
    5) Public transport to Schiphol no problem at all. Asking a neighbor to take you to the nearest railway station, or further if necessary, makes it cheaper and more enjoyable.
    7) yes, more and more people are going with those big planes.
    8) You also cried as a child. And the nurse, who will soon take care of you in the nursing home, too, just as she will listen to your nagging.
    9) I would rather pay for what I consume myself than pay a fixed amount in the ticket price to anyone who wants to fill up on board for free. I don't ask for a buffet on the bus or train either. And otherwise.. fly business or first class. In fact, those refreshments cost a god's fortune, but .. don't draw a separate wallet.
    10) baggage check: thanks to the Islamic (yes, never any other group that commits attacks. So they have saddled the world with a huge cost) terrorist attacks, rather 60 min baggage check than 60 hours at a strange airport.
    11) A flight attendant is to help the passengers, not to captivate the male passengers because of overwhelming youthful female beauty. “White” women are just a bit taller and wider than SE Asians. If they weren't there.. this would be another point for Jantje Klompenboer to complain about.

Main rule: "what you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others"

  16. Robert says up

Personally, I think it's a miracle that people don't beat each other's brains out, especially on longer flights... Actually a big compliment for the staff of most airlines. A lot of this can be attributed to (lack of) flying experience and flying for the lowest possible price. But with the right company, a well-chosen seat, online check-in and being well informed, you can go a long way. Now an alcohol ban at airports in the departure zones...

  17. Albert van Thorn says up

With my previous one I have not forgotten between am ….rasist sorry.

  18. Christina says up

What keeps us most busy are the drinkers on board. Also people who leave the chair in reclining position for you, even if you ask nicely, you can put the chair forward while eating. Recently on a flight to America, no question, not even when the steward asked, okay, he wrote down the seat numbers and asked me, will you come in the back, but eat and we will ensure that there is a report and that their frequent flyers points are not added. And the people who don't follow instructions from cabin crew. Belts are fastened etc. The luggage has a surprise every time the Last filmed bag stuck out is that bag yours well they can just talk to a wall no answer then many problems bag out and again then takes up two places and the staff goes through his back because it is so heavy. The other day I had fragile neatly on top of another throw it down stops and pushes it other place and then hold back and say nothing because then they go crazy.

  19. peter says up

It is also very annoying if you are sitting in the back of the device near a toilet.
People then hang on the back of your chair and use it as a meeting point.
    Entire stories and just linger.
Just a matter of no manners.
Not determined social to put it mildly.

  20. vanderhoven says up

There is a rather spicy response to the mail from the man who is - rightly - annoyed about fat people who
    use half of your seat.
Now I can understand that not everyone chooses to be fat.
But then it must also be understood that we also just pay our ticket for an WHOLE seat
to get. Surely it's not MY fault that someone is overweight.
I once sat on half a seat for an entire flight……… I can't recommend it to anyone.
I won't tolerate it anymore either. equal money, equal rights and obligations.

For me, holidays are something I look forward to all year! And if I was disturbed by everything I would just stay home. If you want to hit a dog, you can always find a stick.

    TIP
If you can reserve a place yourself… Find a place close to the place of the footbridge. Last in first out. So the first thing at immigration
With China airlines…participate in frequent flyer program….65 + check in at 1st class. So no long queues.
sleeping pill on a long flight. Flight 8 hours shorter.
    Have a nice flight

  23. Rob says up

Hellaas I always have to fly with klm because I take my dog with me (rather fly with china air or thai air.)
And that it is affordable , 200 € if I leave from Amsterdam and if I leave from Bangkok 200 $.
Then I ask in Amsterdam why I have to pay more, they just say nice because that's the rule, I understand that not only KLM understands it.
Other companies ask € 32 per kilo my dog plus cage is 45 kilos, so that is € 1440 one way.
Explain that to me too (annoyance ???.)
Almost 2x as expensive as my return ticket, it doesn't take up a seat, doesn't get food, doesn't take 20 kilo luggage, pure scam
I'm almost 2 feet tall and legroom is always an issue.
But recently I was sitting on the window side, the person in front of me can't go backwards with his chair.
Because I'm stuck and he got mad that couldn't lean back with his chair
You know what that fucking flight attendant said it was my fault because that man had a right to sit back
So I was not entitled to anything, not even to just sit.
Even wildly strange people started laughing .
Sometimes it is neatly solved, but KLM is not really into solving it.
And I really get that screaming children are a disaster on the plane.
I don't have children why should I be bothered by other people's children.
It makes no sense to say you were a child yourself.
So you can just enter the plane smelly because everyone stinks sometimes.
    Nice and simple huh.

  24. Max Bosloper says up

Laughable, so little legroom, it should be banned, especially the klm, makes a mess of it, always spend a lot of money for extra legroom, and then too narrow seats, bah, bah, in Thai that is grazy, Gr, Max

    • Hank b says up

Maybe , . . no longer choosing KLM, a simple but effective solution? You don't go to the bar where they only fill the glass half full, do you? Or do you go to a butcher who doesn't even say hello when you come in? Just choose the better and good? Could it be that you have to go without the low-cost ticket Idea and pay a little more? Don't forget that you will be on the plane for about 11 hours. Then you also want to sit comfortably, at least I do.

  25. tlb-i says up

My main annoyance is that many people buy a plane ticket and then start whining about things they bought themselves. Typically Dutch, whining about something or others but never blaming yourself. Fly cheap and crave champagne.

  26. Henk J says up

Annoyances often arise from not having a clear picture of what you are buying.
You know in advance how to pay for food and drinks on board. It is clearly stated on the site where you book.
Queuing at check-in? This is the only way to get on the plane.
This procedure is also clear. Annoyance at Schiphol? Yes, it is strange that the laptop and tablet have to be removed from the luggage, but it is even more strange that the charging cable also had to be removed from the hand luggage.
You can choose space in the plane yourself and depends on the airline you fly with.
However, you cannot choose your passenger next to you.
On my last trip I had someone who immediately sat down wide, pushed his elbows into my sides and spread his legs out wide.
After three times I made it clear that I paid for my place and that I am not interested in sharing my space.
Surprised look but that's his problem.
I also see a plane trip as equal to a train trip.

  27. Jan.D says up

You have people who will and have to go to Schiphol by car, because they don't trust the Dutch Railways. They hate having to wait a long time at Schiphol. If you have to take the first train from Groningen to Schiphol early in the morning, you also have to get up early. Otherwise, leave a day earlier and stay in hotel IBIS, for example. But no, that costs money. You can't please everyone. Don't we adults know that yet!!!
And what comes next: “I paid for that, right?”
Inform and inform dear people. You yourself know what you are getting yourself into. Very simple. In that respect we can be piss people, unbelievable.
Have a good flight and come home safe. Came home after the holiday, then the tough stories will come, really!!

  28. Rob says up

    My annoyances are:
    – departure times in the middle of the night
    – sometimes lesser to bad meals.
    - little interest from staff
    – connecting flight has departed.
    – change of seat due to organization and no longer being able to choose a seat.

    • Cornelis says up

Don't you consciously choose that yourself by choosing a certain airline, Wim?

  30. Jack S says up

Nice to read this…. as a former flight attendant I can add something: it doesn't happen often, but when it does, everyone will agree with me: source of annoyance No. 1 on board can be when you have a sweaty foot smell fellow passenger next to you. Not only that, any smell (it could be the perfume cloud of the woman in front of you) can ruin a flight. A fellow passenger who stinks of garlic.
    A close second: snoring passengers….
Number three of annoyances on board: a passenger who sits at the window during the flight (when it is still “night” for everyone) and lets the full sunlight shine in, because he wants to look outside.
Number four: a passenger who has the volume on his headphones turned up so loud during a night flight that you can hear it five rows away.
Number five: people who stand or sit and chat noisily with each other during a night flight.
Number six: (that used to be on the flights where smoking was still allowed): a smoker who deliberately sits in the non-smoking rows and who keeps getting up for a cigarette. I used to usually direct people to an empty chair, because they weren't allowed to just stand anywhere to smoke. Until a passenger who sat next to such a seat told me that although he was a smoker himself, he had people sitting next to him who smoked continuously on that flight. That was too much even for him.

As a former flight attendant, I would like to say something about the staff. I, too, was annoyed by people who were too fat to walk the aisles with elegance. I once had a flight where I had to work with two ladies, both of whom were short and terribly fat. You have to imagine that in a galley you have little space to work and that you can hardly pass anyone. With these fat ladies that was not possible at all. They were quite nice, but simply too fat for such a workplace. Let alone that it didn't exactly give a nice picture.
The fact that they are a bit older is not necessarily a disadvantage. On the contrary. In recent years I have always enjoyed dealing with colleagues my age. The stories and conversations were very different from a 20-year-old girl.

Another thing I can imagine that could annoy you as a passenger are effeminate male flight attendants. That was not always fun to work with either.
And then you sometimes had those colleagues who thought they were on board to re-educate passengers.

However, I must say in defense of my ex-colleagues that 95% of my colleagues were really enthusiastic and the goal they set themselves on a flight was always the well-being of the passengers. We often had to improvise and deal with situations that weren't always easy. But mostly it was resolved well.

Oh and finally a correction: stewards and flight attendants are not primarily on board to play the waiter in the air for the passengers. They're on board because there should be trained people on board, assisting everyone in the event of an accident, be it an evacuation, emergency landing, first aid, whatever, and get them to safety if necessary.
This is in contrast to what is done in practice. Look, bringing food and drinks is not difficult. Can many. But besides that, the most important thing was your emergency training. And if you didn't make it to the annual exercise for your aircraft type you worked on, you were allowed to pack.

Whining and complaining is all you can do, think of the people who don't have the money to make this luxurious trip. A little bit of patience and understanding for your fellow man and your trip will be a lot more pleasant and like some here, Don't put people in boxes like people with gold chains, tattoos or people who are way too fat. You should be ashamed of yourself, shame on you.

-If your Thai girlfriend of no more than 50 kg has a little more in her suitcase than allowed on the ticket: For those few kilos you have to pay extra at KLM and also once at Thaiair.
So she weighs less including the suitcase than most passengers without a suitcase.
Yes, she likes to bring a few presents for the family, but then someone is in training again when checking in and then the rules are followed exactly. Sorry, wrong row selected.
-At Eva and China air I have had terribly bad seats a few times, they looked like hammocks. Fortunately, in Thailand you can enjoy a massage after the flight.
-What I hate on the plane is nagging people, haha.
-When the plane lands, most passengers look like Olympic high jumpers, because as soon as the plane seems to be standing still…. yes, then you immediately have to grab that hand luggage, of course, and then have to wait another 5 minutes in the strangest attitude. I always sit comfortably; I always have fun watching everyone do it.
-When boarding it always seems like a competition who gets on board first; I already know where I am in advance anyway, so let everyone do their own thing, look around a bit and I can board the plane with a smile on my face.

I always go to the airport by train, nice and on time. As soon as I'm on the train my holiday feeling has already started. I don't feel like sitting in the car stressed.

  34. Sir Charles says up

In itself no objection to a chat, but when someone starts whining and complaining about how bad everything is in the Netherlands or take the person who keeps talking about his Thai family and acquaintances circle in which there is always someone who holds a high position in the government , the police or in business and then hear it said with a lot of fuss 'if there is anything I just have to say his name and it will be arranged for me'.

Very annoying, I abruptly cut off such conversations.

And for the rest, I'm almost 2 meters tall and have been flying with different airlines for years, generally with complete satisfaction. Oh well, you always keep little things and nagging stockings, but I won't let that ruin the flight. Just buy a noise canceling headset, watch a movie and relax.
