The Thai market of low-cost airlines is becoming crowded. The new Thai Lion Air will start operating flights from Don Mueang from December.

This new low-cost airline is a joint venture between the Indonesian Lion Air and a Thai partner. The Jakarta-based airline is growing very fast and now has a fleet of 75 aircraft. Thai Lion Air will fly with a Boeing 737-900ER.

Initially, these will be flights between Bangkok – Jakarta (Indonesia), followed by Bangkok – Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Thai Lion Air will also operate a domestic flight on the Bangkok – Chiang Mai route (3 times a day). The budget flyer wants to expand further in the coming years with flights from China and India to the main tourist destinations in Thailand.

Unfortunately, parent company Lion Air is not undisputed because it is, together with a number of other Indonesian companies, on the list of airlines with an operating ban for the EU, due to failure to comply with safety requirements. For the same reason, the airline has been rejected several times as a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
