In the period from 20 April to 14 May, a total of 5,2 million people are expected to travel to, from and via Schiphol. In the official May holiday week, the number of people arriving and departing is 7-8% more than in the same week last year. The busiest day will be Friday, May 4, with 226.000 travelers. Schiphol, together with its partners at the airport, is taking extra measures to manage the crowds.

For example, many extra employees are hired during the holiday period. At the security check, for example, there is more than twenty percent more occupancy than in 2017. There are also many more employees active elsewhere in the terminal, including employees who show travelers around the terminal, employees who travelers can go to with questions, and special crowd teams to handle all streamlining passenger flows. In addition, Schiphol is expanding the social media team and travelers can turn to the digital Schiphol Assist, which means that more travelers can quickly answer their questions.

Other measures

In addition to deploying extra employees, Schiphol is taking the following measures, among others:

  • Two extra security lanes in Departures 2
  • Two extra security lanes in Departures 1 when it is very busy
  • Small bags only: separate waiting area for people with little or no hand luggage
  • Flexible teams that Schiphol can deploy where possible
  • Airport assistants: office workers who help on the terminal floor
  • Up-to-date passenger information via Schiphol app and website

Traveler tips and requests

For a smooth journey as possible, Schiphol also has some tips for and requests for travelers. The most important one is to be at Schiphol at the advice time that their airline gives. For flights within Europe this is often two hours in advance and for intercontinental flights it is often three hours in advance. The advice is not to arrive much earlier, because then travelers will have to queue unnecessarily for flights that leave earlier.

Other tips are to take as little hand luggage as possible so that the security check goes faster, to check the validity of the passport and travel documents at home and to keep an eye on the current flight information via their airline, the Schiphol website or the Schiphol app . Travelers can find more tips at www.schiphol.nl/tips.

One airport, several responsibles

When departing from Schiphol, three airport partners are responsible for the smooth flow of passengers. Firstly, Schiphol itself, which is responsible for the infrastructure and the security control of travelers and their luggage. Second, the airlines, who are responsible for check-in. Finally, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, which is responsible for border control.

Time to indeed start regulating that crowds, why do all those weeks of people have to leave from Schiphol to Barcelona, Mallorca, the Turkish coast and so on.
These flights can easily be divided between Rotterdam/The Hague, Eindhoven, Maastricht, Groningen, Enschede.
Good for employment there and good for the growth of Schiphol, the Netherlands does not benefit from 180 holiday flights per day from Schiphol.
But from Schiphol as an international / intercontinental Hub within Europe!

Dat wordt nog aardig passen en meten want ik neem aan dat op 4 mei rond 20.00 uur de vliegbewegingen en activiteiten op Schiphol gedurende enige tijd volledig zullen worden opgeschort.

  3. Bjorn says up

Schiphol and the Kmar simply have to deploy staff when the crowds demand it. If they do, there is nothing ad hand. Another point is looking at the quality of employees. Verl hang a bit against empty counters and are anything but proactive. They have no idea what is expected of them.

Those security checks are still a farce, by the way
