There will be a new service in Economy Class on intercontinental KLM flights. At the start of the intercontinental flight, Economy Class passengers will receive a bottle of water, a refreshing towel and headphones with which they can immediately set up for the journey. After this welcome service, KLM offers passengers an extensive choice of meals on flights from Amsterdam.

On an intercontinental day flight from Amsterdam, the renewed meal service includes a hot meal of your choice, a large and richly filled salad and a dessert. In addition to regular snacks, additional refreshments such as ice creams, sweets and savory snacks are served on medium and long-haul intercontinental flights. Passengers also have the option of getting these refreshments from the galley.

KLM will start with nine destinations where the new service will be offered as of July 1, 2018. The service will be available on all intercontinental flights from October 28, starting with the winter schedule. These flights are divided into day and night flights, but also in three different zones:

  • Short intercontinental flights.
  • Medium-haul intercontinental flights.
  • Long intercontinental flights.

The range of the total service differs per zone and corresponds as much as possible to the biorhythm of the passengers. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will also be offered on all flights, as before.

Reason for new Economy service

In the new collective labor agreement for cabin crew, it has been agreed that one less crew member will be deployed on a large number of intercontinental flights. This includes a service in Economy Class that is more efficient. By making better use of the space on the new meal tray, more trays fit in a trolley so that passengers receive faster service. The new service also better meets customer needs. The amount of food and drink on board remains the same while the quality of service improves.

Sustainable catering

KLM makes the catering on board as sustainable as possible. UTZ certified or fair trade chocolate and coffee is served on all KLM flights. On flights from Amsterdam, KLM only uses certified animal-friendly chicken and egg products for meals on board. KLM has received the Good Egg Award and the Good Chicken Award for this, among other things. Where possible, the catering on the flights from outstations is also sustainable.

The new intercontinental Economy concept also remains as sustainable as possible. The new trays and cutlery are lighter in weight, which helps to reduce CO2 emissions. Finally, the paper placemat has disappeared from the meal tray, saving millions of sheets of paper every year.
