'Internet on flights from KLM to Bangkok'
KLM claims a world first with 3G mobile data traffic on long-haul routes.
From February 2013 it is possible to use the internet high in the air with this airline on your own mobile devices, such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone.
Send emails
KLM (and Air France) passengers can use this service to send text messages and e-mails during the flight, as well as watch live broadcasts of TV programmes. The specially designed inflight website offers many different services, such as the latest news, TV channels and important information about the airline and the destination.
The airlines ask for feedback from their customers on the onboard Wi-Fi system. Expectations and suggestions to improve the new service are also welcome. Passengers can use their Wi-Fi enabled smartphone, laptop or tablet for a fixed rate. They can also send data via mobile phone in every travel class.
Costs still unknown
It is not yet clear about the costs for using the service. KLM is currently looking at the possibility of a possible hourly rate and also a flight rate. “We want as many people as possible to try this service during the test and we will take this into account in the costs. We are also testing the inflight system on flights all over the world,” said the KLM spokesperson.
Flights to Bangkok
The new service will be available in the test phase in 2013 during flights with two Boeing 777-300s, one from KLM and one from Air France. It is not yet clear when this service will be fully rolled out and will also be available on flights to Bangkok.
5 years ago I was already able to use WiFi with Korean Air. Just Skype and read email. And yes, I flew across the Pacific from Los Angeles to Korea. So the conclusion that you can't get Internet without ground stations doesn't sound entirely fair. It also strikes me that if the airlines can make money, the use of WiFi is suddenly no longer “dangerous” for navigation. Foreign? Just follow the money trail.
Rising fuel prices put pressure on the result.
Air France has been losing KLM for years. This is an unhealthy situation.
Reorganization is coming and long-haul flights are being scrapped.
Using the internet on these flights can provide extra income.
Being able to use the toy at a great height may cost quite a bit.
The cash register is already rattling…
That has long been possible with Emirates – and perhaps others – although I personally failed to do so last time.
