European airlines transported 1,6 percent more passengers last year than in 2012. The number of flights to distant destinations, such as Thailand, grew particularly strongly, by 3%. Within Europe, the number of air travelers increased by 1 percent.

Occupancy rate increased

This was announced today by the European trade association Association of European Airlines (AEA). In total, the 29 members of the AEA, including KLM and Finnair, processed 375 million passengers last year. That was 5,6 million more than in 2012.
Aircraft load factors also improved by 0,7% to 79,9%, reaching an all-time high, according to the AEA.

Profitability under pressure

The trade association is pleased with these figures, given the difficult economic situation in Europe. However, the profitability of many airline companies is still under pressure. Airlines can't cheer yet. According to the AEA, a lot still needs to be done before there is a real recovery.
