Schiphol has grown considerably this year and a new record was set with 52,2 million passengers. The question is, did these passengers also arrive at their final destination on time? In 2013, there were 4% fewer cancellations or delays of more than 3 hours. This improvement is not evenly distributed among the types of flights.

Short haul flights (< 1500km)

In 2013, 67% of flights were short haul flights. This is 2% less than in 2012, but the number of cancellations has increased by 10%. This can be explained by the many Air Traffic Controllers strikes in France in 2013, among others. In terms of delays, short-haul flights have improved by 25%.

Medium haul flights (1500 km – 3500 km)

The number of medium-haul flights grew by 1,5% in 2013, while the number of cancellations and delays of more than 3 hours decreased by 12%. This decrease is mainly due to the performance improvements of the Dutch charter companies, such as Transavia, Arke and Corendon Nederland.

Long haul flights (>3500 km)

Long-haul flights also improved by 15% compared to 2012, with 1% growth in flights in 2013.

Not only did the number of passengers grow in 2013, but the performance of the airlines also improved. The European Court of Justice reconfirmed the regulation on 23 October 2012. This once again made it clear that passengers are entitled to financial compensation in the event of flight delays or cancellations. Our conclusion; the Regulation works and has led to improved airline performance.
