Dear Ronnie,

A retirement visa does not exist, according to many? However, my just obtained visa for one year says: Retirement Visa.

So right?

Regards,

Max

Dear Max,

That is not the case according to many, that is also the case. A “Retirement visa” does not exist at all. It is therefore not a visa but an “Extension of stay”. Extension of your period of stay.

Some immigration offices put the name “Retirement visa” on the stamp, but that is wrong. There are also stamps with “Thai women visa”, “Thai marriage visa”, but all incorrect. The word “visa” is used incorrectly here.

In my passport, the stamps of the extension (both those of Bangkok that I had previously, and those of Kanchanaburi now contain the text “Extension of stay permitted until…. Below the text is only the word “Retirement” as the reason why the extension was granted.

Nowhere in the stamps you will find the word visa and that's how it should be.
