Dear Ronnie,

I have a visa from 05 November to 04 February. It says category TR. What does that mean?

Am married to Thai. Which visa do I need? Am 63 years old.

Regards,

Jan

Dear Jan,

1. When your visa states that it is valid from Nov 5 to Feb 4, this refers to the validity period of the visa. You must enter Thailand within the stated three-month period. The visa is not valid outside that period.

2. When it says “TR” on your visa, it means that this is a Tourist Visa. Upon arrival you will receive a residence period of 60 days. At immigration you can extend that period of stay once with an extra 30 days. Costs 1900 Baht.

3. If you are married, you can obtain a Non-immigrant O based on your Thai marriage. Age is then irrelevant. This is only important if you want to obtain a visa based on “Retirement”. Then you are also allowed, even if you are married, but then you must be older than 50 years. Some embassies even raise that age to 60 or 65, or you must prove that you are over 50 and already officially retired. This is possible for certain professions.

More information regarding the Non-immigrant O visa, or extending the period of stay obtained with that visa, can be found in the links below.

4. I find it strange that people first apply for a visa, then do not know which visa they have, then state that they are married to a Thai and how old they are and only then ask which visa they should have… .

Well, everyone has their own way of working for sure…
