Thailand visa application: Applying based on “Thai Marriage”

Dear Ronnie,

For 4 years I have been requesting an extension of stay at immigration in Chiang Mai based on retirement. As income statement I use the visa support letter from the embassy. However, due to the current exchange rate of the Baht, it becomes more difficult to meet the requirement of 65K Baht per month. I think several retirees have this problem.

I am now considering applying for an extension of stay based on being married to a Thai. We have been officially married for 5 years now. I also own the yellow Tabien Baan.

My question in this regard: can I simply ask for an extension based on marriage at immigration this time and can I only use the visa support letter for this, or does one also have to have an amount in a Thai bank account?

My current extension runs until January 4, 2020.

Dear Harry,

You can simply submit your application based on “Thai Marriage”. Normally this should not be a problem. They will then ask for several pieces of evidence about your living together and you will probably first get an “Under consideration” period of one month. In that month you will probably be able to expect a visit from immigration.

As for the financial. If they accept a “Visa Support Letter” with no actual deposits for a “Retired”, they will do so for a “Thai Marriage”.

For your information.

There is also still the option to apply as “Retired”. You can then use the combination method. You then prove the income with the “Visa Support Letter” as before, but because that is insufficient, you can supplement the missing amount with a bank amount. Together (income and bank amount) must be 800 Baht on an annual basis.

So maybe also to consider.
