Questioner: Jan

My 30 day extension indicates January 16, 2023 as the last day. Does that mean I have to leave Thailand on January 16 or does it have to be 1 day earlier? If I want to do a border run by car to Laos, on which date should I re-enter Thailand?

Are there any requirements to enter Laos or re-enter Thailand?

1. January 16th you have to go outside.

2. You come back to Thailand whenever you want, but a visa on arrival for Laos that you can buy at the border gives you the opportunity to stay in Laos for 30 days. If you just want to make a border run and want to come back immediately, you don't have to do that by car. You can leave your car near the Thailand immigration post. There is a parking lot there. To the immigration post in Laos it is only across the bridge and there are constant buses that take you there and back over the bridge. If you go a little longer and you want to go with your own car, I don't know exactly what the requirements are. Especially when it comes to the insurance of your car and how long it is valid in Laos.

3. There are no requirements to re-enter Thailand.

A visa is required for Laos, but you can get it at the border. Don't forget passport photos. I don't know if proof is needed towards COVID for Laos.

Perhaps there are readers who have recently made a border run to Laos and want to share their experiences.

Perhaps also regarding the use of your own car.

Crossed the border by boat last Sunday
Visa 1500 bath. I didn't have a photo with me
But no problem. transfer with boat 70 bath.
    No covid papers needed.

      Dear Marc,

What is the route by boat, and what kind of boat is it
That then? how many people are on that boat?
What are the costs per person of the boat?
And where does the boat depart from? And what are the departure times?

Marc, thanks in advance for your replies
Hope you will and can help us answer this.

      Greetings from Herman

Although I also wanted to go to Laos with my car before the Covid situation, it hasn't happened yet.
What I do know is that in Thailand you have to apply for an “International Transport Permit” if you want to go to Laos. It is a small purple booklet in which the car with registration is mentioned. Cost was B75 as far as I remember. and is valid for 1 year. In Laos itself you have to take out a separate car insurance. This would be possible at the border.
I have not yet investigated visa and other requirements.

Forgot something about the purple book. I obtained that at the Nong Khai driver's license office and did not forget to bring your passport.

And forgot something Henry, your car must be paid for, otherwise you won't get over it either

I went to laos with my car on December 4th.
Get your car passport at the land & transport office.
Take the blue book with you.
Make copy of blue booklet and insurance.
Making papers for the car on the Thai side.
In my case you will receive excellent help from customs or immigration people.
The same on the laos side.
    Register car on a terminal.
    You will be helped.
Well one of hop to her.
    But it can be done.
    Don't forget to buy insurance.
In my case 200bht for 7 days.
Fine if not done at police check.
All together time at the border about 2 hours incl. visa 40$ or 1500bht.
    Good luck Ben Geurts

Don't forget a copy of your passport and page of your Thai visa or entry stamp.
Car Passport is the little purple booklet.
    Valid until next apk
The car must be in your name.
So with a rental car it doesn't go as far as I know.

Been to Laos by car at the beginning of October 2022.
My stepson arranged everything, I was allowed to pay.

What Ben Geurst says all sounds familiar. There is now a large T sticker on the car. Front and back.
I did have to show my Covid vaccinations at the border.

Whether that man who helped us at the border was an official, I doubt. But the family was happy with it.
