Thailand Visa Question No. 413/22: Visa Denied

Questioner: Nina

We have been traveling to Thailand since 2002 (aged 74 and 76, not married). We always obtained a visa for 3 months in Amsterdam, no problem at all. After 2 corona years we thought we would go back to our second homeland. Everything now had to be digital. Hired an expert for this. We are digital illiterate!

Despite a net income of more than 2.000 euros per month and a substantial savings balance of more than 7.000 euros, my partner's visa was refused because the last statement of October showed only 670 euros in the account. We already have KLM airline tickets and the resort has been paid for 1 month, so there is already more than 3.500 euros in this matter. We also have a lot of property in Thailand that we don't want to part with.

The meaningless e-mails from the Thai embassy in The Hague drive us crazy. What can we do to spend the winter in Thailand for 3 months?

Seems strange to me that this was the reason your partner's visa was refused. The financial requirements are namely:

“3. Longer stay for retired persons (pensioner aged 50 or above)

VISA TYPE: Non-immigrant O (retirement) Visa (90 days stay)

……

Financial evidence eg bank statement, proof of earnings, sponsorship letter

The submitted financial evidence must be able to show sufficient means of subsistence for a person to stay abroad. The recommended minimum amount is 1,000 EUR/30 days of stay in Thailand.”

Which then means that it should be 3000 Euro if you want to go for 90 days. If you show a savings account of 7000 euros, that should be enough. Even if that 7000 Euro has been on it for at least 3 months. An income of 2000 Euro should normally also be sufficient, but perhaps the origin of that income is not clear.

Are you also sure that a Non-immigrant O Single entry has been applied for? The requirements of a Non-immigrant O Multiple entry are considerably higher and you do not need that Multiple entry at all. Or sure it had nothing to do with insurance?

I can't give any other explanation why it was refused just with this info.

You could apply for a Single Tourist visa, but the financial requirements are actually the same.

“1. Tourism/Leisure activities

VISA TYPE: Tourist Visa (60 days stay)

.....

Financial evidence eg bank statement, proof of earnings, sponsorship letter

The submitted financial evidence must be able to show sufficient means of subsistence for a person to stay abroad. The recommended minimum amount is 1,000 EUR/30 days of stay in Thailand.”

This will give you a stay of 60 days upon arrival, which you can easily extend by 30 days in Thailand. This is how you arrive at 90 days.

Your partner's visa was refused, you say. Was your visa approved?

Ultimately and as an emergency solution, you can of course always leave on Visa Exemption. Is now 45 days and can be extended by 30 days at immigration. That is 75 days together. If you still want to stay for 90 days, you must of course make a “border run”. A ticket that you can adjust easily or cheaply is of course an advantage here.
