Questioner: Rene

Ronny, you mention that a person has to leave the country to convert his OA into O. As I always read and try to remember your expert explanations about visas I assume that when leaving Thailand he is not allowed to apply for re-entry as he otherwise upon re-entering his OA will continue until the next year renewal. Is this right?

Thank you and to all readers a happy Easter and keep you healthy.

Indeed, if you want to cancel a period of residence, you do not have to request a “Re-entry”. And of course the validity period of your visa itself must also have expired, otherwise you will not get a new visa, or you will be granted a period of stay on arrival based on that OA visa that is still valid (in this case). But it is of course also possible that a “Multiple Re-entry” has already been requested and it will only expire on the end date of your extension.

You can then:

– Plan to leave Thailand at the end of your stay and/or return after that end date. Personally I would plan it like this, because after all you have a valid period of stay and you can use it up completely first. But maybe there are reasons to go back earlier than that end date of course (cheaper airline tickets, family matters, etc)

A solution might be:

– Go to immigration before you leave and ask to cancel your “Multiple Re-entry”. Is it possible or willing to do that?

– Asking the embassy to cancel your “re-entry” in order to obtain a new Non-immigrant O. Do they want to do that?

A blessed Easter
