Questioner: Luc

To answer the question of whether people can go on holiday to Thailand, I still have my doubts whether that is possible. The Belgian government says that holidays are NOT an essential travel and therefore I doubt whether they can do this. Or am I mistaken and can you still go if you get a CoE from the embassy?

I myself would like to go to Thailand on March 17 and bring my wife back to Belgium. She is there from July 2020 because her mom had to go to the hospital. She also has Belgian nationality.

When answering questions about when you can go back on holiday to Thailand, I usually keep it quite general. Because you can't look into the future anyway and you don't know what decisions will be made or canceled.

At the moment there is indeed such a temporary decision that only essential travel is allowed by the Belgian government. But that does not mean that Thailand therefore prohibits holiday travel for Belgians and closes its doors to it.

I therefore do not include such temporary measures if no specific date is added when the trip will take place. I expect the reader to be aware of temporary measures that have been/will be introduced by, in this case, the Belgian government at the time he/she wants/will make the trip.

In this case, that travel restriction will expire on February 28 and you can travel normally from March 1.

There is currently no ban on holiday travel on March 17, but I also do not know what will be decided in the future and whether or not the ban will be extended.

In any case, if your wife has her official main residence in Belgium, she can return whenever she wants.
