Thailand visa question No. 021/20: Visa Exemption
Questioner: Somchai
Subject: Visa Exemption
I am going to Thailand for 37 days in April. Normally I apply for a visa for 90 days at the Thai embassy. This time I plan to take a short trip to Vietnam halfway through my vacation. I am not applying for a visa for Thailand, because I will leave Thailand again within 30 days. My question: when I leave Vietnam and come back to Thailand, will I automatically get another 30-day tourist visa?
Thank you in advance.

1. You can indeed go on “Visa Exemption” (visa exemption) and you do not need a visa for your stay in Thailand.
Please note that, because you are leaving without a visa, proof may be requested at check-in that you will leave Thailand within 30 days. Will usually also need a ticket (Vietnam ticket if you already have one?) as proof, but sometimes a written statement is accepted. In this you declare that you will cover all costs of the return flight in the event of a possible refusal by immigration. It is best to ask your airline about this beforehand and also which proof they are willing to accept.
2. Also when you return from Vietnam you will again receive a period of stay of 30 days on the basis of “Visa Exemption”.
3. FYI
It is not a “30 day tourist visa” but a “Visa Exemption”. That means a visa exemption of 30 days.
