Dear Rob/Editor,

I am working on the MVV for the four-year-old daughter of my Thai partner (who already has a residence permit here). Does this daughter also need permission from the Thai government to come here, if the MVV has been granted?

Or do we have to arrange other things in Thailand?

Regards,

Dear Lee,

There isn't really anything you should really report to the Thai authorities. But your partner will probably have to arrange parental authority papers. This makes it clear to both the Thai and Dutch authorities that there is no question of child abduction.

Which exactly depends a bit on the situation, but the bottom line is that the child is not simply removed from the authority of a legal parent(s) or guardian(s). If her daughter comes from a previous marriage, think of legal papers regarding allocation of the child, or papers showing that the (unmarried) father is not (any longer) in the picture. At the Thai town hall where mother and child are registered, they will probably be able to help her with those papers.

Of course also think of the official translations and legalization (Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs + Dutch embassy) of the original deeds and the translations.

Regards and success,

Rob V
