Schengen visa question: To Spain with my Thai wife

Dear Editor/Rob V.,

Continuing from the article on the Schengen visa earlier, I have the following question. As a Belgian living in Thailand and married to a Thai lady, we have planned a 6-week tour to Spain together. My wife would normally have to apply for a visa through BLS International, the external service provider of the Spanish Embassy.

As I understand from yesterday's article, she falls under the regime of a free visa with a minimum of paperwork. Do I understand from this that she must apply for a visa at the Spanish embassy with a minimum of formalities?

Thanks in advance,

Robert

Dear Robert,

Yes that's right, she should be able to go to the Spanish embassy. In your case, BLS is 100% voluntary, you can choose that. But there is a chance that the embassy does not want to receive you, not all embassies follow the rules. Also see:

Collaborating is often more productive than standing on your own.

Regards,

Rob V
