Dear Rob,

My partner - we are unmarried and not a registered partnership - has been in the Netherlands for a year with an MVV. We now want to bring her 22-year-old daughter to the Netherlands for a maximum period of 4 weeks. I see conflicting messages on the internet regarding visa requirements. Schengen visa required for shorter than 90 days, but also visa-free if shorter than 30 days (provable via the return ticket).

Does anyone know if the latter is correct and/or if there are any requirements regarding medical travel insurance?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Regards,

Maarten

Dear Martin,
Thai citizens who want to come to the Netherlands (or other Schengen countries) for a short stay of up to 90 days must apply for a visa. I advise you to read the Schengen dossier here on Thailandblog for more details and advice. See the menu on the left under the heading “files”, open the item about the Schengen visa and click on the link almost at the bottom of the article for the extensive attachment/file.
No idea where that “30 day exemption” comes from, because that has never been the case. People here probably confuse a holiday to Thailand and a holiday to the Netherlands. Or perhaps the news reports about the Thai Prime Minister or other officials who are lobbying to relax or abolish certain requirements/regulations. “Hearsay” easily leads to misunderstandings, so it is good that you inquire about this on the blog.
Yours faithfully,
Rob V
NB: your girlfriend is in possession of a VVR residence permit. The MVV (temporary residence permit) is an entry visa (Schengen visa type D), which is part of the Entry and Residence Procedure (TEV).
