The Thai navy will investigate the feasibility of a ferry service across the Gulf of Thailand between Pattaya and Hua Hin.

Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said a ferry service could boost tourism and economic development of the West Coast and East Coast. Thanks to the ferry service, the travel time is considerably reduced to about three hours. There was already a ferry service, but that project ended in 2012.

The National Council for Peace and Order has now revived the plan. The feasibility study is expected to be completed in 2016. The plan should be implemented in four years. The first phase of the investment would consist of the construction of the harbour, buildings and moorings. The ferry service should be operational in 2017.

In the first phase, three routes are offered:

  • from Pattaya to Hua Hin;
  • from Bang Pu to Hua Hin;
  • and from Bang Pu to Pattaya.

The plan is to expand the service at a later stage with a route between Bang Pu and Koh Chang, between Bang Pu and Koh Samui and between Bang Pu and Songkhla.

According to Prajin, the intention is to use special high-speed catamaran ferries that sail at speeds of up to 82 kilometers per hour. It can transport 450 passengers and 33 vehicles at a time.

    The ferry service with fast catamarans has been stopped because of too much debris in the water. Too dangerous. Nothing has changed yet (on the contrary) so it won't work again. Someone will make a lot of money from it, the Thaiway at its best.

    The previous catamarans were susceptible to failure and unstable.
    Hopefully these catamarans are more up to the task
    this trail.

    All sounds very promising. .
    I already let them sail back and forth with a navy boat to try it out. Would be fun.
    Let's hope they start tomorrow
    ( just read a story on the blog about the backbone of a mussel ) hihi

    Would be really great, been waiting for it for many years. Especially now that the car seems to be able to come along

    Must be a fairly large catamaran on which you can transport 450 people and also 33 vehicles. Seems like a nice adventure to sail across the sea at a speed of 80 km/h. I'm curious about the price tag that comes with it. Depending on the traffic, the journey by car from Pattaya to Hua Hin now takes about 4 to 5 hours and although it is assumed that any future boat trip will take about 3 hours, you must of course also add the time to to go to the boat and embark and disembark. All in all, not a spectacular time gain, but something different and then hope that you don't get seasick.
