Tunnel construction in Pattaya

Despite last month's rainfall, work on the Sukhumvit tunnel is progressing. This is now already 15% ready.

After months of preparation to dig the 1,9-mile tunnel to the Father Ray Foundation, efforts are being made to stay on schedule. The tunnel will consist of four lanes, two lanes for through traffic and two lanes for oncoming traffic, each direction 20 meters wide. The entrance to the tunnel will be raised so that it does not fill up during heavy rainfall.

Despite the size of the project, few people are employed, as most of the heavy work is done by machines. The biggest obstacle is delays due to extreme weather conditions. During the tropical storm Vamco, work was temporarily interrupted, the construction site turned into a quagmire. However, it is assumed that the planned duration of the construction of the tunnel, of three years, will be achieved. A number of pumps must ensure that the water can be pumped away immediately in the event of rainfall and construction can continue unimpeded.

The narrowing of the Sukhumvit Road and the use of the parallel road next to the railway remains a nightmare for many motorists. The traffic police try every day to keep the traffic flowing, but usually fail. Thai motorists have their own view on driving and that does not promote traffic flow.

Few people are working. The weather conditions are not good for that.
Because the road goes from 4 to 2 lanes in both directions, there is of course normal society
a stop or parking ban has been placed on those parts, nobody adheres to it. Not even the builders.
Often loading and unloading on the only two lanes left.
After three years, the miracle will have been performed. I hope I can still make it.
After a cloudburst, that tunnel is flooded. Only those bag fillers have made a lot of money again.

I thought it was about excavators, but now I'm reading about pickpockets again.
But no kidding, it will still be a big improvement when it's finished. Pattaya is still growing at the seams, despite disappointing tourism and weak economies.

How am I supposed to see now? That tunnel still goes down, right? Even the Maastunnel [Rotterdam] suffers when there is a lot of rain, but I am curious what that should look like.

    An elevated entrance or entrance…
