They are immensely popular Thailand the pickup trucks. The bigger the better. It is also a status symbol in Thailand. Sometimes you see a hovel of a house, but a brand new pick-up truck parked next to it. Of course on installment or leased.

Although they are not intended for this purpose, you regularly see the pick-up trucks passing by with many people in the back of the box. Often packed with Thai construction workers or agricultural workers. Sometimes even with small children.

You do understand that this is dangerous. You have absolutely no protection during an accident. There is a good chance that you will be launched by the impact and hit your head against something or hit the street. But in Thailand there are few rules and dozens of people die every day in the 'Land of Smiles'.

The video below was sent to me. I don't know exactly where it happened and whether it actually took place in Thailand, but it seems that way. In any case, it shows how dangerous a pick-up can be when you transport people with it. In the video you can also see how far they are thrown away. Fortunately, some are back on their feet. It appears that the driver and his fellow passenger are in worse shape. I also wonder if they had seatbelts on.

Warning: this is a heavy film so it may not be suitable for everyone.

It is still a third world country in terms of traffic. All traffic rules are flouted and there is only one traffic law, viz. Whoever is fastest and boldest usually has priority until things go wrong, as I saw last week where 2 cars drove through the ran a red light and a dozen mopeds lay on the road looking only at the green light. One of the 2 cars drove on but was still able to write down his number and is hopefully thinking for a long time where he doesn't want to be.
Although money can buy everything in this country.

In Thailand and especially in the holiday areas they should do something about the traffic decency of the Thai. Now I have to admit that there are also farangs that are not inferior to the Thai. However, expressed as a percentage, this is virtually negligible. It is the Thai who is scandalously guilty of this. Just walk around in Pattaya and you'll understand what I mean. The vast majority of holidaymakers are men of a good age. Many of them have the habit of drinking early in the day. You will then see them walking around, on their way to the next bar. Often they have to cross the road. In addition to the fact that your reaction time has decreased somewhat due to the drink, the Thai makes crossing the road a bizarre undertaking due to its antisocial driving behaviour. They don't care if you're standing at a zebra crossing, it's always full throttle.

When the Thai talks about improving the infrastructure, he means building hotels, department stores and other such mega projects. The construction of new and improvement of old roads is carried out on a very modest scale. But what good are beautiful roads if the Thai persists in his anti-social driving behavior. Why is the Thai (local) government doing so little about this. Is collecting the fine much more important to the Thai police than the well-being of the farang? It appears so. Will the Thai realize that their existence is largely dependent on the farang? That the farang ensures that food is put on the table, that the children can dress and go to school, that (grand)parents in the home areas are kept going. Why then is the same farang outlawed in traffic?

Most likely not Thailand, because they drive on the right. Nevertheless, it should be mandatory to watch the video before the driver's license is issued.

    • Very cleverly noticed. I hadn't noticed yet.

    terrible traffic in thailand..
a solution would be to make a number of streets traffic-free, that would be a lot more pleasant.
sometimes with a simple adjustment, traffic can be diverted.
rules are only there for the fallang, you will notice that if they break you, they are there like the chickens to put you in the right place.
it would be highly desirable if traffic lights and sufficient safe crossings were placed around pattaya.
they have never heard of giving priority to pedestrians.
there are a lot of accidents there.
