Dear readers,

The day before yesterday, Thailandblog's website has undergone an important change. We have replaced the default WordPress comment panel with Disqus.

Please note: you can still respond as you used to. Although you will be asked for your name and password, you can check below that you want to respond as a guest. Then you don't have to create an account. However, you must always enter your name and you will not receive any e-mail notifications. Creating an account once therefore offers many advantages.

There are a number of reasons for this. The main one is that the database of responses became very large and that requires some computing power from the server. There are more than 60.369 comments on Thailand blog, a huge number, with Disqus that is a bit easier to manage.

Another advantage is that Disqus has much more functionality than the standard WordPress comments. She can easily respond to messages with Disqus via, for example, your Facebook account. You can also share your reaction via social media. Disqus also offers you an overview of other discussions that are going on on the Thailandblog website. That way you won't miss anything. Another advantage is that you can add more media (such as video and photos) to your comments.

As a user (commentor) you can also create your own account on Disqus, from there you can manage all your own comments. Look here: www.disqus.com/profile/signup

What is possible with Disqus:

  • It is possible to add an avatar. An avatar is a picture that is used as a user image on the internet.
  • You can create an account on Disqus and see and edit all your own reactions from there.
  • It's even easier to add photos and videos to your comment.
  • Sharing a comment or the discussion on other social media such as Facebook and Twitter is very easy.
  • You can vote again on reactions (both positive and negative).
  • Also handy: you can sort all reactions yourself by best, newest or oldest.
  • It is possible to mark comments as spam or junk to alert the moderator.
  • You can see the profile of other commenters (if they have created a profile on Disqus), so you can get to know each other better.
  • Another option is to follow certain commenters. Click on the avatar and you can then choose to follow that person. So every time he/she posts a comment, you will receive a notification and you will see the response. This can be useful if you find that someone often provides valuable comments.
  • Etc

If you have any questions or run into problems, comment or send an email: [email protected]

Soon we will come with a more detailed explanation.

I thought – what is happening on the blog – takes some getting used to.

    • Khan Peter says up

Dear Ronny, that's right. But this offers much more possibilities so we see it as an improvement.

Dear Khan Peter. Just a small addition in connection with responding to….. . A few days ago, just after the change, there was an up arrow and a down arrow at the bottom of the text and the word Share. Now the word Answer is added and I want to try it out. Am an ardent fan of Thailandblog. Greetings Dre

Dear Khun Peter, I can't find my test response. Please some help. Thank you Dre

I'm afraid I don't quite understand how everything works yet. I haven't been able to post a photo yet / keep doing my best

  3. arjen says up

Now isn't this a lot like chatting Khun Peter?

I also hope that it is possible to make corrections to already published posts. And an option that indicates whether you have already reached the minimum number of words required would also be welcome.

    A mostly fun forum!

  4. EugeneKian says up

I hope it doesn't become too difficult for some to respond in the future.
It took me some time to figure everything out.
    – First box: email address
    – Second entry box: name without spaces or accent, must also be unique.
    – Enter password
    – Verify email with Disqus
    – Click on the D Icon
    - Login
    Send message
Good luck with this new start!

    • Khan Peter says up

You do not necessarily have to create an account. You can also respond without.

      • Eugene Kian says up

Thanks Khan Peter. I had read about “or choose a name”…
I am not a Facebook or Twitter user, so I had no experience with the 4 login options on the left and had wrongly studied them.
I will now respond as a "guest".

I'm probably a klutz at everything that has to do with computers, but after a while this will certainly work and offer more benefits. Logging in or registering at Disqus, no problem, only our mom's Facebook page was still open on the PC. Well that would have been embarrassing for her so try again tomorrow at my place lol! PS: as a guest you can also comment, this post is proof, so, great!

  6. Henk Weltevreden says up

So, arranged. Now just wait and see what's going on. Was that a linked spam I saw or a sponsor of Disqus 😉

  7. Ben says up

    @hans.
Since the change, I'm having readability issues.
The background of the article is blue with white letters, which is perfectly legible for me.
The background of the comments is faded blue, the text is faded black, it is difficult to read, can that be adjusted? How? Who gives advice? Thank you.

As a complete computer layman, I was also surprised by this change. I have found the most necessary in the meantime. I would like to ask, if allowed by the moderator, if there are one or more persons from the Pattaya-Naklua area, with a lot of computer knowledge, would like to help their less gifted users with advice and / or action?
A phone number to contact would help a lot. Here's mine: 08 26 31 01 32 I could really use some help, Thanks in advance to all and happy reading.
    Denis

    • didi says up

SORRY, a mistake in the number.
      Must be:
      +08 (06)31 01 32 XNUMX XNUMX
      Hopefully no problem.
PS A drink of choice for the good samaritan and
PP,S. I'm not an evening person, so contact before noon or after noon, but not in the evening. Best thanks !!!

  9. Ruud Louwerse says up

I like this way of responding. People suddenly get a face. When I read something from you (Khun Peter) I always thought of the picture of the beautiful Thai girl, although I knew you weren't (hihi) Was nice that picture too.
I always wrote under Ruud, but there were so many Ruuds that I changed to Ma Ruud. Not anymore either.

    • Jose Huntersma says up

Not a direct response but just trying to see how it works. I noticed it yesterday and wasn't too happy with it. But maybe we will soon get used to it. Especially now that it's logged in. Hope it goes well.
Missed Khun Peter's photo but I'll catch up on that one

    he does i think

  11. Rob V says up

It takes some getting used to and I already had an account (barely used), now I have to see how I can change my display name from “Rob” to “Rob V.” because otherwise I can't be recognized among all those Robben... 😉

    • Jacques Koppert says up

Include a photo Rob, that makes everything clear. I succeeded after several attempts. Photos that are too large are not accepted, but a photo of a few hundred kB is fine, see my picture.

      • Rob V says up

Yes, that does make it a bit clearer. Often you will immediately recognize users by the picture (avatar) at a glance.

The images must be very small (100 by 100 pixels?). That leaves little room for details, for now just a card from Khon Kaen and if I find a nice object in my mountain of holiday photos, such as a beautiful gilded statue, then maybe that. I'm not that keen on a photo of myself, I may not be ugly, but the fewer photos with my head on the net, the better. 😉

Sometimes it takes a bit of scrolling. For example, I didn't manage to change my display name at first. I had changed “full name” but did not see an okay button. I thought that would happen automatically when closing the “edit profile” window. Not so, in most menus you have to scroll down a bit to see the okay button to confirm changes.

The "edit" option is also useful, so you can still correct mistakes (layout, spelling, grammar, ...). Sometimes I don't see it until I send a message...

  12. Other says up

does it or does it not?

Just 1 word "cool". please continue with the blog
    greetings ouwan

  14. Jack S says up

I wasn't too happy with the switch either, but now I think it's an improvement, since I already use disqus on other forums and am registered there.

  15. René G says up

Dear editors, no problem with the working method, but with the current colors - background colors of the comments. There is too little contrast between text and background and for the visually impaired - like me - this is a problem when reading. I have to click on the text every time to make it readable for myself. Thanks for the attention.

  16. kees 1 says up

I can't get anything shipped. Just wait until the kids come along and then it will work

  17. self says up

The change from "just" responding to an article, etc. as before, to this more quasi-"modern"-looking Disqus environment, does not benefit me. I find the environment busy and cluttered: on the left a very different layout than the rest of the page; all kinds of images that scream for attention; a large white font, also different in shape, on a blue background, with a white field in which I type my response; and the most annoying thing: I have to scroll all the way down to read the first comment. Then I go up to read the comments. Then I have to go back down to read replies to comments. Finally find where I left off. Never mind! And then there is the choice between Disqus, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, log in or send as a guest. Well, can it be an ounce more? Pick a name, it is then asked. Bye! Was signed, Soi.

    • Khan Peter says up

Soi, we're going to do a test run for a month and then we'll make a final decision. It is therefore also possible that we go back to the old. There are also many positive comments such as more readable, you can manage your comments, easy to attach photos and videos. Easier sharing on social media, etc.

Well, I took your comment to heart first. That is a matter of attitude at Disqus.

      • self says up

Dear Khun Peter, with great respect for your unbridled commitment and initiative with regard to Thailandblog, but – more readable – it is simply not: those were the first enthusiastic reactions after the launch of D. There are people everywhere and always who shoot into ecstasy, in other words, as a good Dutch saying goes: first profit is cat purring! I hope that after the trial month the question concerns. readability is up to the reader/commentant. It is strange that it was not communicated that a month trial would be run. If only we had reacted much more together to provide the Thailand blog responsibles with feedback, and therefore to be responsible for Thailand blog together. What wasn't, is still possible! A tip: organize a panel of a few after the probationary period
experts who are critical of the changes and progress of the implementation
monitor and advise. Pay particular attention to the increasingly aging among us,
who already indicate that they have difficulty with the number of (mouse click) actions, let alone creating an account. What is also extremely annoying is that a long reaction from someone suddenly stops. At the bottom outside the reaction field to be read, you have to click to conjure up the whole story. I happen to know about that mouse click. But if you don't know it's almost impossible to see, it's that dark there. Finally: Thailandblog can no longer be followed via tablet and smartphone: the articles appear, but not the reactions. Occasionally a name or a separate line, otherwise a large white field. Nevertheless, all appreciation. Soi.
