For those who don't know Co, Co was one of the most famous Dutch people in Bangkok. He was the first to organize bicycle tours for tourists in the Thai capital. A resounding success.
I knew that Co had been ill for quite some time. A while ago he wrote something for Thailandblog: https://www.thailandblog.nl/steden/geen-overstromingen-bangkok/
Almost every fervent Thailand-goer knows Co because they once made a bike ride with him. Co is no more but he remains in our thoughts.
More about Co:
Co van Kessel, an adventurous and innovative Dutchman, was the first to develop bicycle tours in Bangkok more than 25 years ago.
As a long-term resident and enthusiast of the varied metropolis, he fully understood the picture of rapid urban development, deadly traffic jams and air pollution. This is not Bangkok.
Co made rediscovering Bangkok his life's work. He spent many thousands of hours on his bicycle traversing the streets, lanes, alleys, slums and canals between the major thoroughfares.
He found true treasures of everyday Thai life. The real Bangkok, which still exists. Life that has hardly changed in recent decades. An identity of the city that is virtually unknown to outsiders.
The combination of colours, scents, the local markets, the fascinating life along the canals, the surprising presence of large green areas: all this was rediscovered by Co. This is the essence that makes Bangkok one of the most enchanting Asian capitals.
A big loss. Colorful, powerful man. A Dutchman who makes you feel proud to be a Dutchman. That's quite an achievement. Rest in Peace, Co.
Have been able to enjoy your great bike rides year in one piece.
Thank you for the great experiences. Condolences to family and relatives. Rest in Peace, Co
RIP
I wish the family, relatives and friends a lot of strength with this loss of a man who always had plenty of energy.
We are surprised by that, we were not aware that he was ill. Co is a wonderful guy, with his own unique view on life. We made three trips with Co and those were the highlights of our first visits to Thailand. Co was able to talk beautifully about Thai life, which is of course completely different from our Western version. The headline “in memoriam Co van Kessel” was really shocking.
Think that Co made many people even more enthusiastic about Thailand than they already were.
I would say "co thank you for your beautiful memories"
Hope his company keeps the name and continues what they do best, showing the real Thai life to the tourist in a few hours!

Proud of my big cousin! A typical example of the VOC mentality – in a positive sense –
It's nice that he was spared further suffering, but especially sad for his father who has already lost two sons.
Rest In Peace Co.
Pim
RIP
I wish the family and all relatives a lot of strength with their loss.
Never met the man myself, but like anyone who has a lot with Thailand, Co was not an unknown name.
Again a lot of strength
Rik
We have not made any trips with Co in Bangkok, but we have studied the activities that came about thanks to Co. If you spoke to Dutch people in Bangkok about Co van Kessel, but also far beyond, you would get very positive stories about the fun bike rides he organized.
Co…… you don't know me but make the long journey by celestial bicycle, we will probably meet each other sometime.

old LPer, another one of our old club has passed away, this really upsets me, you will live in our hearts, Rest in Peace, Erik Schoenland
Rest in peace Co, my condolences to the bereaved family!
Thanks for the walking/cycling tours. I did 3 at Co van kessel and they showed me a beautiful side of Bangkok.
I knew Co as a driven guy, full of humor and self-reflection. Bangkok is a lot less colorful without Co, a fighter to the bitter end. If heaven exists, he cycles there to organize tours…
Dear Co... a shock for us to read that you are no longer among us... I still remember that together with Phariel van Helden [View Travel], we later suggested to Vieng Travel the idea of setting up a travel organization at our home in Utrecht. Bangkok... which you have also done with great success... but I chose to send my children to study in the Netherlands and was therefore unable to benefit from my own ideas. Say hello to Phariel who left us before...and one day we will be together again.
Gerrit
Didn't know he was sick, was shocked by the news, he wasn't that old, was he?
Made a trip with Co several times, a colorful man, the children are still talking about those bike rides.
Made a long video film of a trip, almost 10 years ago, he then told about his daughter who had just met him then, and showed pictures.
I was surprised by the small apartment, with a very large map of Bangkok on the wall, he didn't need more, he was always outside.
Love reading their comments on Thailand's predecessor blog, the prick pages
Will miss him as I walk through my beloved Chinatown saw the group of cyclists approaching in the distance,
Co you were a good one for the Thailand Promotion, how many times have I come across him in magazines, and of course the telegraph.
Rest in peace Co, I will miss you.

“All roads lead to the temple…”
Co, I had to be patient with you, but I learned so much from you. Thank you, and especially good luck to your father.
Hello Wim,
Strange to hear from me this way.
In July 2010 I cycled with husband and son with Co in Bangkok. He was the same guy from then, nothing changed except his hair, straight and short. He was very relaxed and cheerful. Don't know if he knew then if he was sick, didn't let it show.
We also had dinner together, which was very nice.
I received this message from Jac.Toes, a former friend of Co. I didn't know anything about it, but find it shocking and incomprehensible.
You're all right, what are you doing these days?
Greetings Janine
Shocked when reading the message that Co van Kessel has passed away, Thailand loses a striking person, I myself have been able to make a bike ride with him 3x and he has shown me a different side of Bangkok. I wish his relatives a lot of strength with this loss.
I only know Co from his contribution to this blog, but it is still sad to hear that someone like him has passed away. I wish the bereaved a lot of strength!
What a pity that such a unique and special person is no longer here.
Yes, as the Buddha says, everything is constantly changing, Bangkok is no longer quite the old Bangkok for us.
Have fun up there up Co and thanks for the bike rides!

What a shock to learn that Co has passed away.
A true ambassador of Thailand in general and Bangkok in particular has left us much too soon. Co has made many people enthusiastic about his country and his city. I am one of them, thanks in part to the many wonderful bike rides I have been able to make with Co. Co's enthusiasm has led to a wonderful company with tours that show you a surprising side of Bangkok. Very special to experience was also the 60 temples tour in honor of the king's 60 years of throne. With this special tour, Co made a wonderful gesture to Thailand. I hope the bike business continues in Co's style for many years to come.
Co rest in peace and wish all family and friends a lot of strength with this great loss.
In November 2010 I did the bicycle tour of Co in Bangkok with the fox travel group.
If you ask people what they remember most, despite all the beautiful and interesting places in the rest of Thailand, the cycling tour was regularly mentioned.
I wish family and friends a lot of strength and strength in the coming time.
Co, may you rest in peace.
We always made one of his tours with the guests who came to us. There were many over time. These trips were a highlight of our people's vacations. Hoping that your work may continue.
Good luck to all who were close to him, family, friends and last but not least all guides.
May he rest in peace and condolences to the family
It saddens me very much that Co has suddenly left us.
Partly at the basis of the development of cycling tours with Co door
Bangkok, I have come to know Co as an extremely amiable man and friend for life.
Co, you're doing well,
gash
A great man has passed away.
Too bad I can't get to see him anymore.
co thanks,
Kees
Best family,
Condolences on this great loss.
I have been able to make many trips by bike (unforgettable) and our dinner together during one of those trips is etched in my memory….
Co thank you and I hope your tours continue.

This message was shocking to me, As a klmcrew member I made several trips. Enjoyed his trips, especially the ones he went on himself. My children also enjoyed his tours. I can't believe Co is gone. I wish all his loved ones a lot of strength with this loss.

This scares me. I have known Co since 1974. Co was one of the people in the Netherlands who got the prices of the gramophone record down. He started a store in Arnhem with later many branches throughout the Netherlands with good cheap LPs. The shop was called Elpee.
I worked for Co at that time. I met Co a few years ago when he was in the Netherlands. He was a great guy with a nose for business. I will miss your nice emails Co. Rest in peace and thank you for what you were!
Condolences to the relatives of a fair Dutchman who managed to make it in Bangkok.
I read this blog regularly but apparently missed this post.
Can someone tell me if his business is going to continue.?
Hello Michael,
The business continues. Understand that his buddy and girlfriend Miss.Nong is moving on. Knowing Co, he arranged that well.
I cycled with Co in July 2010 with husband and son. It was great especially because we got a VIP trip from him. I'm a former girlfriend of Co, that's why.
Regards, Janine
