Editors' notice: Reviewing responses adjusted

February 1 2013

Since the beginning of August 2012 it has been possible for readers to rate a response as good or less good.

If you thought a comment was valuable, you could let us know by clicking the thumbs up button at the bottom of the comment. If you thought the reaction was bad, nonsensical or hurtful, you could click the thumbs down button.

Unfortunately, this anonymous review provided the opportunity to misuse it. Apparently some readers thought it logical to judge almost every comment as negative. It seemed to focus mainly on the person and no longer on the substantive reaction.

That is why we have adjusted the assessment system as of today. It is now only possible to reward the writer of a helpful comment with a thumbs up. It is similar to Facebook's 'I like' button. If you believe that a comment is valuable to yourself and/or other readers, reward the commenter with a thumbs up. If you do not agree with the response or if it is not valuable in your eyes, you do not have to do anything.

This makes it even easier to see which reactions have been rated the most valuable by the other readers and which reactions are less good or less interesting.

Pfff, recently came to the hospital for a magpie, a Thai doctor asked me why so many farang come to see him with a bruised thumb. Those are people training themselves stupidly for the thumbs-up at the next Olympics, I said. Oh, he replied, didn't know this was an Olympic sport. He smiled, but hit my corn eye hard with a silver hammer….

I think (found) the minus option in itself is fine, but it would be nice if people could leave a short comment. Some reactions have a lot of quibbles, but hardly any or no substantive reaction why the message is seen as bad/stupid/not good/….

Wait and see Jacques. Soon in this blog theatre: The Secret Life of Johnny Thumbs Down, the revealing and poignant story of an unemployed thumb pusher.

Also happy with this change. I've read comments that were completely innocent and got x number of minuses. Who and what are those figures whose thumb seems to be glued to the minus button? Drunk maybe? Or psychotic. Or just XNUMX percent acidified. Great this "like" system. Keep it like that. No more touching.

Too bad, those minuses indicated so well when you kicked against holy cows. Personally, I'd rather have 15 minuses than a meaningless 0 score.

@ Bacchus I have noticed several times that under an article every - I repeat every - reaction got a minus. That has nothing to do with disapproval. Some joker must have thought he was funny. I'm glad those memorabilia have expired. If someone has a criticism, he should add a comment. That also works.

Dear Bacchus, if you want to kick holy cows you can still do so. Anyone who thinks something about it can come up with their own reaction. Makes the discussion much more interesting than a pile of negatives, where you can only guess what is bothering the thumb pusher.

    Hello…

I also think this is a good decision, because after all, it's all about us: our love for Thailand…

I can sometimes get annoyed by the spelling mistakes… I am certainly not a language specialist or a techie, far from it, but there is such a thing as a “spell checker”… but despite that I have never pressed the minus key…

And finally, we still have the moderator to steer everything in the right direction…

No matter how you look at it: the better this blog gets, the more fun we have…

I wish you all a happy Saturday 🙂

    Rudy…

And where is the spell check? I can check whether English words are spelled correctly (do I have to enter my text in an e-mail), but I cannot test Dutch words for zreivvauten,

    @ Bacchus…

Here we go again, hey, and you know by now that I appreciate you, but what are sacred cows?

This often concerned poisonous comments that had nothing to do with the topic… very meaningful stories were also judged negatively…

I'm never going to give anyone's reaction a minus, because I respect everyone's opinion ... as long as it remains of course to the extent of the decent ...

And if you say something here that has substance, and you get -15, doesn't that say a lot about the fifteen people who respond, Bacchus?

Most of what I read here is an enrichment for me, and I can only be happy about that, so I don't have to give anyone a negative…

    I wish you the best…

    Rudy.

    • TNT says up

If you get minus 15, this also says something about the content, I think. By the way, I think you should add your comment

    • Bacchus says up

Dear Rudy, any response can indeed be an enrichment, provided one understands and/or wants to understand the content and that is often the crux!

I myself have never pressed the plus or minus button because this is meaningless. Don't hide behind a button and give an opinion! A good discussion is enriching. Of course, you don't always have to agree with each other. A good debate/discussion is therefore meant to convince others that they are right. Also, don't confuse sharp remarks with venomous remarks. The latter are intended to create a certain atmosphere and that is never an objective in my case.

I read every item on this blog with great pleasure and like to give my opinion. Of course you can reject it. I don't argue to prove myself right, although this is often thought, but to remain silent is to agree. So I will never remain silent about certain points, such as the general contempt of Thai women and the always supposed rightness of the Western man. You can do it or not! A lot of minuses can sometimes indicate that you are very right!

Moderator: Comments without initial capitals and periods at the end of a sentence will not be posted.

  9. Mark says up

Okay haha, I wrote; I wouldn't worry too much about those few niggles, especially if they can't be considered serious.

    • Jacques says up

Look, Mark, that's exactly what I mean. Don't push pointless thumbs but respond and give your opinion. I'm sure Bacchus appreciates this too.

  10. Rudy Van Goethem says up

    @TnT.

You have to stay on topic…

Bacchus means that with a well-founded message you can indeed get a -15, just because you ventilate what others do not want to hear, but perfectly the truth is…

So Bacchus prefers a -15, knowing that he kicks certain people in the shins…

The truth may also be said, although certain “day dreamers” do not appreciate that…

    Rudy…

    • Bacchus says up

Dear Rudy, this is indeed exactly what I mean! I know that my reactions are often not judged substantively, but only by name and then given me ′′ minuses ′′ because people think I'm a whiny pusher who only wants to be right. Nothing is less true! Giving anonymous negatives is easy, you don't have to respond substantively. To me that is something for simple souls. Stand for something and give your opinion, that's what a blog is for! Fortunately, we can no longer hide behind anonymous negatives on this blog; must start to yield a lot of positive contributions when I consider all the former minuses!

      • math says up

Dear Bacchus, I completely agree with your posting this time and they also have a value as you write them down. I just think (hopefully thought) that you personally attack too many people about eg Pattaya. The people you describe are certainly walking around there, I see them often enough myself. But how many people on this blog are like that? I just think if one has not been somewhere or has not been for a long time, one can be a little more careful with some comments. Tried there often enough to reply to you, but no luck. It was described as chatting. If you stop generalizing about theme parks, your posts will also be read from a different angle, because everyone now knows how you view the theme parks. But reading stories and hearsay is a bit too little content for me. Nor am I going to tell a mason how to erect a wall when I can't yet hold a hammer. You feel comfortable in Isaan, the other in Hua Hin or Pattaya, live and let live! That from now on we can have nice substantive discussions on the blog, the clichés have been read often enough. Kind regards.

    @ Lije Vanonschot…

” zreivvaut, “… I assume by that you mean: spelling errors?

Most PCs support “spell check”, just right click on the word that has a red jagged underline, and correct…

    @Rudy,
An iPad does not have a spell checker. What now? Do you also have a suggestion for users of this tablet, like me?

  13. Rudy Van Goethem says up

    @ robbie…

Every program has a spell checker… just type a word wrong, and it will be underlined in red, right? Just right click on the word and correct it..

Sorry moderator, I know, it's off-topic… just trying to help…

    Rudy…
