View of the Chao Phraya

I bet that no reader of Thailand blog knows the restaurant located on the Chao Phraya River, listening to the name Krua Rakangthong.

Unless you are a real 'Bangkokkiaan' and know all the ins and outs of the city. But then we would have read some of your posts a long time ago. Although I can imagine that you don't want to reveal such a beautiful spot to just anyone. Honestly, I got there through a good one Thai friend, who has known the restaurant for some time.

Location and Region

The fairly simple but excellent restaurant is located directly on the river and from the dining terrace you have a truly magnificent view, especially at night, of the majestic Chao Praya river, the boats sailing there and the beautifully lit Wat Arun some distance away. Admittedly, the way there is not an easy one for a non-insider and that is why you hardly see a tourist there. Krua Rakangthong has been kept nicely hidden, because you certainly don't discover it by chance.

We're going there

We use public transport again and take the BTS on our way. If you use the Sukhumvit line, get off at the 'Siam' stop and transfer to the Silom line towards Wongwian Yai, which departs from platform 3. You then get off at the Saphan Taksin stop and walk 50 meters further to the pier by the river

The various boats that moor there carry flags with the colors orange, blue and yellow. All boats call at different places or piers. In this case, our destination is “Wang Lang” pier. The easiest is to take the boat flying the orange flag. Making a mistake is then virtually impossible, because this boat sailing to the right always calls at the piers on the right side of the river, with the exception of our destination Wang Lang, which is located on the left side of the river. After passing Wat Arun and passing under the big bridge we almost arrived at Wang Lang.

Krua Rakangthong restaurant

Coming off the boat you will see a large concrete building on the right side. This is the Siriraj Hospital where King Bhumibol has been staying for quite some time. Opposite the entrance of the hospital, walk into the narrow street almost to the end, where you will see the Krua Rakangthong restaurant on the left. Above the entrance to the parking lot you will see a steel arch with Thai inscription and a light box with the name on a lamppost. If you didn't know, you wouldn't suspect that behind it lies, as they say themselves, 'The best view of Bangkok'.

Walk up the stairs on the left, find a place and enjoy the food and beautiful view. Try to avoid the weekends as it can be busy. Incidentally, between the river and the street to the restaurant you will also find a local market where you will not encounter any tourists. Might be nice to take a look there after dinner.

For the return trip you have to rely on a taxi because after sunset the boats no longer sail. At the Siriraj hospital you will find more than enough taxis.

Don't tell anyone else because then too many tourists will visit this very beautifully situated spot and the fun will soon be over.

You can also go to pier 23, pier Kiak Kai. There are a few restaurants right on the water. Spectacular view of all the boat traffic and fun for children to feed the catfish with some bread. After that possibly. on to Khao San road for the more tourist enthusiasts.
The food? Oh well that's fine and so is the beer.

The restaurant still exists and I had dinner there a week ago. My Thai companion who works at one of the foreign embassies is the reason why I haven't written anything about the food. All my attention went to her. But it was very successful in all respects. With a beautiful lady at the table, a beautiful view over the river and a very tasty meal.

Here's the correct address + GPS info. Enjoy your meal

    [email protected]
Address: 306 Soi Watrakung, Aruen Amarintara Rd. Siriraj, Bangkoknoy
    GPS Address: n13'45.243″E100.29.174″8M

    How to get there:
From Wang Lang Pier: walk straight pass the market to the first small Soi and turn left, after about 200 mts you will find a very old-looking brick wall on your right hand and a nice café on your left, get into the parking lot of this café and you'll find a huge sign and the entrance right behind.

From Tha Wat Rakhang. You'll see a big temple when you get down, right before it on the right hand side there's a small street follow it, it will turn left and then right nearly immediately the place is around 30 mts after the right turn.

The Krua Rakangthong is well known. I've eaten there many times before. But going there is not easy and coming back even less so. It is also not easy with the car because of this. with the rush hour traffic on that side of the Chao Praya (clogged bridges).

There are other restaurants on the Chao Praya, which are easier to get to from my understanding. Nothing against the Krua Rakangthong, but they also have an excellent kitchen and an excellent terrace with a view of the river, such as the Sathahip restaurant with more than an excellent parking space.

I did have a similar experience in Nonthaburi. There you have a restaurant on the Chao Phraya called Rim – Fang. With a beautiful view and delicious food for a great price.
We have been there twice and I can highly recommend this restaurant.

I also ate there and didn't like it. Especially the owner who continuously took a seat at our table throughout the evening to demonstrate his -limited- knowledge of English. There are nicer and better tents along the river. And you can do it on foot from Taxin.
