Bangkok has announced plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to manage traffic flow on major roads and more traffic congestion to deal with. This project is a partnership between the Metropolitan Administration of Bangkok (BMA) and the Bureau of Transport, Traffic Policy and Planning.

The aim of the AI-driven traffic management model is to increase efficiency by making accurate estimates of traffic volume on Ratchadapisek, Prasertmanukit and Ratchapruk roads. By analyzing potential bottlenecks and developing real-time solutions, the system aims to optimize traffic flow through adaptive adjustments, such as synchronizing traffic light timing based on current traffic volume.

The technology will leverage the existing network of 1.000 CCTV traffic cameras already operated by the BMA. The data collected from these cameras is used to gain valuable insights. Additional cameras will be installed on Ratchadapisek Road to support this initiative.

Although the BMA has installed about 60.000 CCTV cameras throughout the city, mainly for security reasons, these cameras are not compatible with the AI traffic management system. Officials have noted that the integration of the existing camera infrastructure into the new AI model is expected to add significantly to the effectiveness of the traffic management system.

Bangkok deputy governor Wisanu Subsompon has previously acknowledged the limitations of the city's traditional traffic signal programming, which relies on historical traffic data and focuses primarily on peak hours and weekends. He acknowledged that this approach is often ineffective in addressing real-time traffic conditions and said the most cost-effective measures currently available will be deployed to improve traffic flow within a year.

Well, they are a bit behind.

Or rather: until now no one in Bangkok really cared about it.

The question is whether AI will offer the solution.
In my view, the problem is too many people who want to live/work in one place.
I also lived in Bangkok for a year. I lived near On nut. The crowd is overwhelming, in the skytrain, subway and on the road crowds of people everywhere. how to solve this is a question mark for me.
You should first take a look at all the redundant staff working. These all need to be transported. Most jobs are superfluous or could also be performed at home in 2023.
Digitizing the whole thing would make a big difference. Letting everyone enjoy a good education, that's where it all starts. AI is a good tool to fine tune things but with unskilled people….

Krung Thep is indeed overwhelming… My solution would be to spread the headquarters or factories outside the capital.

Well, for some CEOs / founders it is prestige to be based in Bangkok? Working from home? I don't see that happening any time soon. Just think what gossip you get when the neighbor stays in the house for days (and works, but people don't see it)!

And it adds to the status of sitting in a traffic jam in the car to/from work…
