The iconic indie cinema Scala in Bangkok has organized an almost unique screening of “The Godfather” and “The Godfather Part 2”, the American classic, which tells the story of the New York mafia family Don Vito and Carleone for the real film lover.

Made in 1972, The Godfather won three Oscars that year for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Screenplay, while the sequel won six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.

“The Godfather” will be screened once on sunday february 11 at noon and “The Godfather Part II” op sunday february 18, also screened at 12.00:1000 in the afternoon at the Scala theater. A maximum of 100 people can be accommodated in the large cinema, tickets cost only 14 Baht each and will be sold at the box office of the theater from January XNUMX.

The Scala movie theatre

There is also something to be said about the Scala film theatre, because it is regularly threatened with closure and demolition. The movie palace was built in 1969 and since then millions of visitors have enjoyed movies. It is located in the heart of the Siam Square commercial area, but is widely regarded as unique for its vintage atmosphere and Art Deco architecture. When I saw the pictures it reminded me of the old Tuschinski theater in Amsterdam.

But the renewed threat of the end of Scala has angered and saddened many moviegoers. Philip Jablon, author of The Southeast Asia Movie Theater Project, says: “The Scala Theater is a building that many Bankokians and others around the world believe is more than just a commercial enterprise. It has deep social value, cultural identity, architectural singularity and historical significance to many. With the demolition of Scala, all this will be lost”

The threat is not gone and if you are going to see the two films, it may well be the last screening at the Scala film theater.
