Residents and tourists on the resort island of Phuket have been warned of possible flash flooding and dangerous mudslides as heavy rain is expected to hit the province and other areas in southern regions.

The Thalang district in particular is at risk now that it has been hit by downpours since Thursday evening. The deputy governor for Phuket, Prakob Wongmaneerung, said officials were standing by to help and that weather forecasts should be closely monitored.

The meteorological department has said that more than half of Phuket will be affected by heavy rainfall from Friday to Sunday. Heavy rain is also expected in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Songkhla provinces on the Gulf of Thailand.
