Doi Mae Salong, more than just tea (video)
Doi Mae Salong is a mountain in the very north of Thailand and is located in the province Chiang Rai just 6 km from the border with Burma. The region is best known for the cultivation of tea, but has much more to offer.
The villages of Mae Salong are often overlooked by tourists, but that is not right. They are located almost 50 kilometers north of Mae Chan district in Chiang Rai province and are popularly called 'Little Switzerland'. But unlike the 'heart of Europe', mainly tea, oolong and green tea grow here.
Its history is remarkable, as the tea is grown by former troops of the Kuomintang who fled from China, who sought refuge here in the early XNUMXs. They now live very peacefully from tea cultivation and that has given them access to the select group of the Otop (One Tambon, One Product). These are tourist villages that want to bring their own production and way of life to the attention of passing visitors.
A third of the tea from Mae Salong now goes to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are working hard on possibilities for accommodation with residents. For now, backpackers from Europe and Japan are the main guests. They pay between 2 and 4 euros per night. Includes a cup of tea…
In the video below you can see the beautiful region with an impressive flora and fauna and idyllic villages.

A beautiful setting indeed. We went there this spring, in a newly opened guesthouse that was quite luxurious for us (and also cost a little more than 4 euros per night). It is worth a visit just for the regional cuisine. Photos on https://www.flickr.com/search/?w=14708865@N06&q=mae%20salong
Been there too, really beautiful, I crossed almost all of Thailand, to find a nice wintering place, but really don't find any! Because I can't choose between the hundreds of beautiful places!
