Dear editors,

Can my wife travel to other Schengen countries with the obtained visa from an MVV procedure?

For example, if we want to visit Sweden for a week, is this visa suitable for this, or must a Multiple Entry visa be specifically applied for?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Warm regards,

Remco

Dear Remco,

I cannot determine with certainty from your question whether your partner only has the MVV (entry visa type D) or whether she has already come to the Netherlands and is in possession of a VVR residence permit. People sometimes confuse the two and talk about an MVV while the partner has been living in the Netherlands on a residence permit for a long time. Fortunately, the answer is the same: in both cases you can visit Sweden or any other Schengen member state for a holiday together. I also address this in the “Immigration Thai partner” file. You can find this file on the left in the menu under 'Dossiers': https://www.thailandblog.nl/wp-content/uploads/Immmigration-Thaise-partner-naar-Nederland1.pdf

If she is in possession of a VVR residence permit, this information will go on:

Can we go on holiday within Europe?

Traveling within the Schengen area is no problem because a residence permit replaces the Schengen visa. Your partner will of course travel with the Thai passport and the VVR residence card. Your partner can also travel outside the EU via these Schengen countries or enter the Schengen area via these countries.

If you have only recently completed the TEV procedure and she still has to come to the Netherlands with an MVV, the following applies:

Can my partner come via Belgium or Germany with an MVV?

Yes, although the MVV is a type D visa, it also gives access to the entire Schengen area for 3 months as if it were a VVR residence permit. Your partner may therefore also enter via another member state, so if you prefer to arrive in Belgium or Germany, that is fine. Of course you will wait for your partner at the airport. The MVV is even a multiple entry visa, so if necessary your partner could even travel back and forth to Thailand within the valid period of the MVV. If you are unsure whether the airline knows all this, please contact them in advance.

Now there will be few people who go on holiday with an MVV, to avoid discussions with, for example, the airline - which may wrongly fear that your partner will not be able to enter Sweden - my advice would be to travel on her VVR pass in along with her passport.

Have a nice trip!

Yours faithfully,

Rob V
