Srettha invites Putin for an official visit to Thailand
Despite growing international tensions surrounding Russian President Vladimir Putin, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has invited him for an official visit to Thailand next year. The invitation, announced in Beijing, comes amid Putin's international isolation and after a recent meeting between the two leaders that focused on trade and cultural ties.
Thanks in part to Russia, Thailand was never colonized
In the last years of the 19th century, Siam, as it was then known, was in a precarious situation. The danger that the country would be taken and colonized by either Great Britain or France was not imaginary. Thanks in part to Russian diplomacy, this was prevented.
While the entire Western world and some countries in Asia strongly condemn Russia's attack on Ukraine, a sovereign country, Thailand does not. Prime Minister Prayut says that Thailand remains neutral.
Putin wants to supply Thailand with the Sputnik V vaccine
Prime Minister Prayut has announced via his Facebook page that Russia wants to supply the Sputnik vaccine to Thailand. Russian President Putin has now agreed to it, so there is nothing to stand in the way.
Thai army buys Russian helicopters and Chinese tanks
The army in Thailand has its eye on new transport helicopters and tanks. Since relations with the United States have cooled considerably, the US wants Thailand to return to a democracy, the toys of the Thai army are mainly bought in China and Russia.
