There is a misunderstanding among many readers whether they are insured if they stay abroad for more than 8 months. It might be interesting to mention below.
Reader question: Uninsured in Thailand and returning to the Netherlands due to illness
An expat friend of mine who has been living in Thailand for years and has also been deregistered in NL has been living here in Thailand for years without medical insurance. He is 79 years old and says that taking out health insurance here in Thailand is unaffordable for him. He claims if something more serious happens to him, heart problems, cancer or even more serious problems, he just takes a one-way ticket to the Netherlands. Register again in a municipality and that every health insurance company must immediately legally take him back on, regardless of his complaints and regardless of any waiting time. Is that right?
