Until the abolition of absolute monarchy in 1932, Siamese historiography was a matter for and of the Court. In fact, it was the prerogative of the kings, princes, nobility and eminent monks. History was a hobby of the Great and certainly not a matter for the 'little Luyden'… Kings like Mongkut and Chulalaongkorn and princes like Damrong, Narit and Wachirayan published historical studies. Chaophraya Thuphakorawong was an integral part of this tradition, but gave a completely new, idiosyncratic and innovative twist to writing history in Siam.
