Quite a few Farangs live in Isaan, part of which leads a farmer's life in their own way. Officially they are not allowed to work on the land, but hey, they won't look that closely in the countryside. If those Farangs have had a past as a farmer, they probably never plowed by hand anyway. After all, that's what a tractor is for.

Buffalo population in Thailand is shrinking sharply
Whoever sees pictures of the rice fields in the Isaan usually comes across an icon: the water buffalo. However, this will become less and less in the future. Now the country has only 800.000 buffalo, in 2009 there were 1,3 million, according to figures from the Department of Livestock Development.
Buffalo skin and a disappearing northern tradition
The number of buffalo in Thailand is steadily decreasing and with that a number of delicious, typical Thai dishes, in which dried buffalo skin plays an important role, are also at risk.
