Chiang Rai is not the best known but it is the northernmost province of Thailand. Chiang Rai province shares its borders with Myanmar (Burma) and Laos. The provincial capital Chiang Rai is located almost 800 km north of Bangkok and 580 meters above sea level.

Doi Tong is located in the northwest of the city. The mountain is located near the banks of the Kok River. Hike to the top of the Doi Tong. Here you can enjoy a nice view of the city and the river. In the southwest of the city, at the Doi Khao Kwai (Buffalo Horn Hill) you will find another viewpoint. The Wat Khao Kwai temple has a terrace where you can enjoy the view. Wat Khao Kwai is Chiang Rai's most spectacular temple. It was once home to the Emerald Buddha. He now resides in Wat's namesake in Bangkok.

Khun Kon Waterfall Forest Park is located 30 km south of Chiang Rai. This park can be reached via routes 121 and 1208. The 70 meter high Khun Kon waterfall is the highest in the province.

The Mae Chan hot spring baths are located eight kilometers outside this village. It is a large complex with accommodation. Pamee Akha is a picturesque village, one of the most accessible in the province. It is located on the way to Doi Tung mountain peak.

Thailand's northernmost point, Mae Sai, is located in this province in the region known as the Golden Triangle (the area where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet). Mae Sai has a lot of mountain scenery, hill tribes and waterfalls. The border town of Mae Sai overlooks the Burmese sister city of Tachilek. Crossing the border is usually not a problem. It is teeming with shops on both sides.

Even if you think you've seen enough temples, the beautiful Wat Rong Khung is worth a visit. It is located just outside the city of Chiang Rai. The temple is also known as the 'White Temple'. A trip to the beautiful gardens in Mae Fah Luang is also highly recommended.
