De mon bridge about the lake Sangklaburi (province Kanchanaburi) is a special attraction. At 850 meters long, it is the longest wooden bridge in Thailand and the second longest pedestrian bridge in the world.

In July 2013, during a violent storm with a lot of wind and rain, part of the bridge collapsed. Fortunately no one was hurt, but it was a disaster for the villagers who used the bridge every day. The mayor quickly decided that they needed a temporary floating bridge and it was soon made, entirely of bamboo wood.

It was estimated that it would take at least three weeks to complete the bridge, but the villagers joined forces and built the bridge in six days!

The Mon Bridge, also known as “Uttamanusorn Bridge,” was built in 1986 by the Mon people, an ethnic minority group originally from Myanmar. It is the longest wooden bridge in Thailand and the third longest wooden bridge in the world. The bridge is not only an important means of transportation, but also a symbol of the resilience and cooperation of the Mon community.

Breathtaking views

The view from the bridge is breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset. The serene setting, with the calm river and lush green hills in the background, provides a perfect opportunity for photography and relaxing walks. The reflection of the bridge in the water adds a magical dimension to the landscape.

Cultural encounter

A walk across the Mon Bridge offers a unique opportunity to experience the rich culture of the Mon people. On one side of the bridge is Mon village, home to traditional stilt houses, colorful markets and Buddhist temples. Here you can admire local crafts, such as hand-woven fabrics and wood carvings, and enjoy delicious Mon dishes.

Local festivities

The Mon Bridge also plays a central role in several local festivals and ceremonies. The most famous is the “Songkran” festival, where the Mon people use the bridge for water processions and cultural performances. It's a fantastic time to visit the bridge and take part in the lively celebrations.
