De Chatuchak weekend market in Bangkok is the largest weekend market in the world. The market consists of no fewer than 15.000 market stalls!

If you like shopping and haggling, the weekend market next to the Chatuchak park is a must. Chatuchak or Jatujak (Thai: จตุจักร, English: Weekend Market) is also called the JJ market. The market is very popular with tourists and foreigners, but also with the Thai themselves. At weekends, the market attracts 200.000 visitors per day (Saturday and Sunday), 30% of whom are foreigners.

Everything for sale

At this market you will be amazed at the huge selection. Really everything is for sale. The prices are low, so Thai people also buy in this market. This not only concerns normal groceries, but also durable consumer goods such as furniture and household appliances.

Location Chatuchak weekend market

The market is located next to Chatuchak Park. The fastest way to get there is by taking the BTS Skytrain (Sukhumvit line). Get off at the 'Mo Chit' station, walk five minutes and you are there. You can also take the MRT metro: get off at the stations 'Kamphaeng Phet' or Suan Chatuchak (Chatuchak Park) also five minutes walk.

The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 08.00am to 18.00pm.

It's still a wonderful market to walk through. We also use it quite a lot with our webshop, the prices here are very reasonable, especially if you also purchase a bit larger. All in all a nice day full of shopping and delicious food.

Do not miss this market if you are in Bangkok. Bought a lot of beautiful things over the years.
We also know exactly where the stops are or where to cool off with iced coffee. Fixed shops where I buy have a business card but still ask which Soi. Especially dollhouse items, not to mention the beautiful porcelain. We are going in December and we will not skip this market.

This market used to be on Sanam Luang and I went there many Sundays to buy a few books. When this market was closed down and Chatuchak market opened, I went there a few times, I used to live close by but found it a big decline with Sanam Luang. Terribly hot and nasty, I saw large ice blocks being dragged across the ground and delivered to the various stalls and then drinking ice in you, good for the diarrhoea. I believe those ice blocks are now being delivered at about 4am so it won't be seen. It is and remains an unhygienic country, nothing can be done about it. Another thing, ever eaten that meat on sticks, so-called pork? Well, they use dog meat for that too, nice.

My response is a bit late, but that's because the article has now been posted again.
I find Kees' reaction very exaggerated because if you stay longer in Thailand you learn a lot about hygiene. In the Netherlands you should never look into the kitchen in a restaurant because then you will probably never eat out again. Thailand is Thailand and the Thai are also getting old so don't complain about hygiene. I don't know this market but I know that these markets are always busy and fun. So definitely go there and eat Thai cuisine with taste, especially very spicy.

On chatuchac there is also the JJ mall. A pleasant shopping center with 1200 shops.
And the food court there is definitely recommended tasty and never been sick of it.
Part of the market is also open during the week.

To be honest, the whole of Bangkok is one big open-air market, tell me which part of the city that is popular with tourists doesn't have a market. And all those merchants have about every 15 stalls the same stuff they sell, so I wouldn't go there especially.
