Spain is the preferred holiday destination in 2020. With a share of 21%, Spain ranks 1st, followed by Greece at 12%, Italy at 7% and Turkey at 5%. Thailand is also in the top 15 sought-after destinations.
This is evident from the results of the large TravelXL holiday survey 2020, in which more than 3900 respondents participated. It is striking that 23% indicate that they will go to a lesser-known destination this year. A third of those surveyed have already booked their holiday for this year and 60% will do so.
Kind of vacation
The summer beach holiday is the most booked type of holiday with 45%, followed by a long-distance tour outside Europe with 15%, a city trip (13%) and a tour of Europe (9%). The plane is chosen by 79% as a means of transport, 14% chooses the car, 2% the bus/coach and 2% a cruise. When asked what type of holiday, almost half (46%) opt for an 'adults only' holiday followed by the family/family holiday at 37%.
Environment
Only fifteen percent of holidaymakers say that they take the environment into account when booking a holiday, 34% do not, 44% to a limited extent and 5% are prepared to compensate 1% of the travel sum for the environmental consequences.

A bit strange that eg Germany is not in the list, because of course Germany is in the top 15. Makes the research a bit less reliable for me!
Jer
Oh it's about a beach holiday?
Well I don't know beach holiday….Austria is included….
Greetings, Joe
Indeed Ger,
Bit suspicious because Austria has no beach. Germany does, take the seaside resorts and fashionable hotels on the Baltic Sea.
In 2018, NBTC-NIPO Research into holidays shows a completely different picture.
France in 1st place
Germany in 4th place
Interesting how different studies can differ so much.
The research was done into the booking behavior of customers of a travel agency. You usually don't go to a travel agency for a trip to Germany or Belgium.
I think that the Dutch who watch their money, and there are quite a few if I read the reactions here every now and then, will certainly make more use of the Turkey in the near future.
The low 5% holidaymakers for a country with often excellent all-inclusive offers, good food and drink, and almost competitive prices, good hotels and many attractions, almost certainly seems on the low side to me.
Was the question:
– to which country would you really like to go on holiday in 2020? (=dream)
of:
– if you were to book tomorrow for a holiday in 2020, which country would you prefer?
I worked in holiday research for about 15 years and there is actually no connection between plans and real realized holidays, not even in the same year. But of course people are nice enough to answer.
