Apply for an update of a new Dutch passport (reader submission)
More than a week ago I asked a question about my annual extension in June with a new passport. In particular whether I had to go to immigration separately to have the visa and validity stamp transferred.
I had also previously read an article about the time it would take to renew a passport due to the large number of passports that had to be renewed this year. Apparently that's not too bad, because I can pick up my new passport tomorrow, three weeks after I submitted the necessary papers to the embassy in Bangkok.
Since the procedure was not completely clear, here is the entire process when applying abroad. It starts on this website: https://www.nederlandwereldwijd.nl/paspoort-id-kaart/buitenland
There you follow the steps that lead to a lot of papers and a photo according to set dimensions. It's a lot of work, but it's self-explanatory. A printer is necessary because all printed documents must be taken to the Netherlands.
- You make an appointment at the Dutch embassy in Bangkok. Then everything is checked, you pay 160 euros and receive a receipt.
- The embassy takes care of shipping to the Netherlands. You must provide an email address where you will be notified if something is incorrect or incomplete. And also when the new passport arrives at Soi Tonson in Bangkok.
- You will get your old passport back. But you have to take that with you when you pick up the new one.
According to the email I received today, the old passport is being invalidated with perforations in the “biodata page and unused pages” so that the “visas and data stamps” remain intact.
Make sure you keep the proof of payment, they want to see it at the embassy when you come to pick up your passport!
You can pick up from Mon. to Thu. 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm without appointment. You can also have it sent. Everything you need to know can be found in the link above.

This year it is also my turn to apply for a new passport in Bangkok,
However, that is quite a distance for me.
That's why I was wondering whether the new passport must be collected in person or whether it can be sent by post...?
To hand in the papers I would have to drive to Bangkok once, book a hotel and visit the embassy by appointment the next morning.
You will need to bring an envelope with a stamp on it for 44 baht to send your new passport to your address in Thailand. Given the Thai post, is that safe?
Does anyone else have experience with this?
Yes, I have had experience with that for many years. Always went well as long as you send it with EMS.
Passports are always sent with EMS. So YES is safe.
It may also be useful to mention: you must also have your new passport validated at your Thai bank.
And in case of retirement, you must also have the original O non-immigrant visa and the last annual extension, as well as any still valid re-entries, transferred to the new passport at your immigration office.
