Reader Submission: Honest Thai
Yesterday the repairman of our surveillance system came by to make some adjustments to the system. He also checked my TV set in connection with setting channels. BVN regularly disappears from the device and then he has to look for another location where BVN has settled. I have satellite reception.
After work he called me and took a pack of money out of his pocket. Yes, Thais are quite careless about keeping their money, they like to stash it away in their pockets. He counted out 26.000 baht and gave it to my wife. I wonder what is that….? It turned out that my wife had paid 26.500 baht instead of 6.500 baht on previous work. This was checked on both phones when the payment was transferred.
This means that there are enough honest Thais and they should not be tarred with the same brush when it comes to money.
Submitted by Georgio
Maybe fair, but he can't count. 😉
Arithmetic is an art, and Georgio is fair, you just push back 6,000 Baht, and your wife only pays 500 Baht for that work, which she should have paid 6,500 Baht for!
Honest Thai. In all the years that I have visited Thailand and now stay, I have rarely come across a dishonest Thai. Of course they are. But I have never been pickpocketed, never knowingly wronged in restaurants and shops, never robbed. It sometimes happens that I drop some money when paying, it is immediately picked up by someone who notices it and immediately hands it over. If I accidentally forget to bring something from a restaurant where I ate, the waitress on duty runs after me to give it to me. I really have the impression that there is less petty crime in Thailand than in European countries.
In Thailand they are therefore not so generous with all kinds of hoarse morrie to provide shelter. 50 years ago there was also a lot less petty crime in Europe.
Well, that may also be said.
Well, Georgio, as an honest Belgian or Dutch person, it would be nice if you would show the 6.000 baht you got back too much to this honest Thai person who apparently made a mistake in the calculation.
Look! Something positive from Thailand!
That gives me a warm feeling.
They are not all equally fair
At the market where I bought fried chicken I paid with 1000 Bath and got back 980 Bath and it had fallen out of my pockets and no one cares
A few hundred meters away I stop on my moped and felt in my pockets and felt nothing and drove straight back
I was looking where I thought I lost it only after 30 seconds someone took it out of their pockets and gave it back after tip they are not that honest now either
Anyway to report something negative about that "unfair Thai"...... I assume Marc that you now feel comfortable reporting this "typical" Thai behavior. Seriously you had to wait a full 30 seconds,,,not 29 not 31 come on...... Pffff as if this doesn't happen all over the world. This is exactly what I sometimes get green and yellow about here. That raised finger to indicate how bad Thai people are… and how great the Dutch (or Belgians) are.
There are certainly also honest Thai. I once took my husband's pants to the dry cleaners. It turned out that there was still 10.000 Thb cash in his pocket. This was neatly removed and stored! It was handed over upon collection.
I once forgot my laptop bag on the local bus when getting off.
A second before driving off, a Thai man was hanging out of a window and caught our attention, hanging the laptop bag out of the window.
I was just able to tackle him and the bus drove away immediately.
This man was very honest, too bad there was no time for a reward.
He certainly deserved that, because the laptop and accessories had cost me 1500 euros.
Of all the countries I've visited, and there are quite a few, Thailand is the only country where I feel really safe (except for the traffic).
No problem to just put your iPhone on the table within everyone's reach. Do that in Paris for example??
In doing business they will try to make you pay too much, but with your agreement. No theft.
