Want to transfer money to my girlfriend in the Philippines?
Dear readers,
I am now in the Philippines and there it is impossible to get money from my credit card in a well-known national major bank; only outside at the ATM, but only 10.000 pesos/about 175 euros in one go.
In Thailand this was no problem before Covid!
My question now: how can I transfer a large amount of 350.000 pesos/about 6.500 euros to a beneficiary/my girlfriend who cannot get a job and therefore cannot get a bank account. With WorldRemit I can only transfer 49.999 pesos in one go.
Regards,
Jan
Editors: Do you have a question for the readers of Thailandblog? Use it contact form..
Is Western Union not an option?
Good idea Peter,
Install the WESTERN UNION app (this is also possible in the Philippines), provide your (bank) details and you can transfer money to her within 5 minutes. She can collect the cash at any Western Union office.
She must be able to identify herself there.
the maximum amount of pesos you can get out of an ATM in the Philippines in one time varies depending on the bank and the type of card you have. Some common limits are:
10,000 pesos per transaction at BDO, BankCom, and most other ATMs
40,000 pesos per transaction at HSBC ATMs
50,000 pesos per day at BPI and BDO ATMs
But what if you open a bank account yourself? Transfer money there and give the ATM card to your girlfriend?
I opened a bank account there about 20 years ago, while I was only there for 1 month.
Steven, I have now found a solution with Westeren Union. I tried to open an account in my girlfriend's name, but because she has no work and income, it is impossible. With WU she can collect up to 200.000 Pesos at a time and that is more than enough to collect the amount to be received with 2 transfers, perhaps in 2 days. I have already advised her not to inform anyone other than her parents and to take both of them with us at the pick-up because you never know what can happen in the Philippines. Do you happen to have an idea of the cost of high school to pay every month or annually because my girlfriend wants to send her back to school to give her a better future. I met her before Covid and in the 3 years that I have been supporting her monthly to pay her house rent, she has learned English on her own; Although rudimentary, it is still enough to understand me more or less, so that is positive and proves that she wants to move forward in life and that she is sensible...
I am also in the Philippines at the moment.
Last year I used Small World to withdraw money from a bank here.
So you send money to Small World, you receive a code, you give that code to your girlfriend, you indicate the place and the bank where she can collect the money.
Google Small Word Bank, Create an account.
Every Pinoy, including me, has a GCash account, you can also deposit money there, I do that with Wise, you can also withdraw that money from the money changers, I don't know how much.
You can send money to your GCash account and then to her GCash, which I do, or immediately to her GCash account.
Opening a bank account for a pinay is easy, my girlfriend only had a student card and not even an ID card and was 18 years old. I used that account and of course her bank card, but due to 2 years of absence due to covid, that account was stopped by the bank. I wanted to open an account here myself last year, but you have to be in the country for at least 6 months. After 6 months I always go back to Thailand and then to Belgium.
Info: I have a Wise debt card where I make all payments in all businesses, which also accept bank cards, very easy and therefore require little cash. Also sometimes get 10000p from the wall with that card, so that card works.
My girlfriend has neither a student card nor a job and therefore no income, so she went back to Manila especially to open an account with BDO, which did not work out. Damn, that BDO lady should have told her that when we were in the BDO bank on Mc Arthur Avenue, grr. If my girlfriend had known that, she would not have had the trouble of coming to Manila and back. Typically Filipino! I tried to create an account with Wise here in the Philippines but never received an answer to my question!!! So I turned on Western Union and when I return home after February 6, I can deposit the money without needing an account from my girlfriend. Nothing works properly in the Philippines. Poor Filipinos!
Much of this story is incorrect.
You do not need income to open an account. Just a valid ID and at least 500php or so for an instant deposit. Some banks do require a balance of Php 2.500 to keep the account open free of charge.
It is also better to go to a state bank such as Land Bank than to a commercial bank such as BDO.
It seems as if your friend doesn't know her way around her own country.
Commercial companies place very different demands on their customers, that is the free market.
she should go to a state bank or a rural or thrift bank, where you can always open an account.
Jason, my girlfriend went back to Manila especially from Angeles because she could not open an account in Angeles, according to the BDO lady at the counter: She has a PostalID with which she can easily withdraw money that I transfer with WorldRemit, even though she has no income. The girl only attended one year of high school, so she doesn't know her way around her own country as you claim. It may be the first time she has left Manila. She indeed went to BDO bank on my instructions and not to one of those other banks you mention. I didn't know that either and thought that the big banks offered her the best chance. Also, 3.000 pesos had to be paid to open an account….
So Walther,
Is the WESTERN UNION app the best option!
No bank account required, no fixed bank address. You can always collect the money worldwide within 2 minutes at low costs.
I have been in the same situation, there are various apps, note that many are way too expensive!
I used to use Azimo, but it has been stopped.
Now I use WISE, it works perfectly fast, the important thing is that you transfer in euros, we now get a lot of pesos for our euros, 100 pesos costs us 1,60, which was once 2,00 euros!
