Dear readers,

I have been living and working in Thailand with a Wajong benefit for several years. This has been fully arranged with UWV and I adhere to all rules and agreements.

Now, on June 8, I read the message by Hans Bos that the payroll tax exemption will expire on January 1, 2024. Now UWV has been deducting payroll tax (NT Groen rate) from my benefit for years.

As a tax resident of Thailand, I wonder if this is justified?

Since I no longer have to make a national insurance contribution, should I not receive my benefit in full, i.e. gross = net, from the UWV? By that I mean retroactively, and up to 2024.

Thanks for the responses.

Regards,

Jacob.

Jacob, there's nothing wrong with that. Benefits such as AOW / Anw / WAO / WIA / Waz / Wajong fall to the Netherlands in the current treaty. The main thing that will change is the levy on occupational pensions and that is what Hans Bos's article was about.

Thank you, Eric. As I understand, will I therefore remain liable to tax in the Netherlands with regard to my benefit? That's clear then.
